LC, University advance to State 4A
Bev Amstadter scored on an assist from Sarah Silha to provide the offense and Sarah Wood preserved the shutout with eight saves as Lewis and Clark (13-4-1) beat Richland 1-0 in a 4A regional tournament match at Hart Field Saturday to advance to the state tournament.
Both teams went into the half scoreless, but in the 68th minute, Silha took an inbound pass from Lexi Greenwood and passed ahead to Amstadter, who converted.
State play begins Tuesday.
•In other 4A regionals: Megan Dempsey scored in the 75th minute as University (12-5) overcame a 1-0 deficit in the second half to win 2-1 in Kennewick. Trailing late in the match, Amy Thornton tied it for U-Hi with a goal in the 74th minute. Dempsey clinched the win a minute later. … District 8 champion Mead (13-2) outshot Pasco 24-3 but could not find the net in a 1-0 loss at Albi Stadium that eliminated the Panthers from postseason. Shawna Anderson broke through for Pasco with a goal in the 74th minute and goalkeeper Mahaley Sapp recorded 20 saves to ensure the upset.
•State 3A tournament: Mt. Spokane and West Valley-Yakima each recorded nine shots, but only the Rams could convert on their opportunities, beating the host Wildcats 2-0 in a state opener. Sandy Hanses and Chelsea Nell scored for West Valley, which advanced to the quarterfinals. Mt. Spokane (14-2) had an eight-game winning streak snapped.
•District 7 2A: Cheney (17-1) earned the No. 1 seed out of the district to the state tournament as Kelli Zakrzewski’s goal off a corner kick in the first half led the Blackhawks to a 1-0 victory over Pullman at Gonzaga Prep. The goal by Zakrzewski in the 23rd minute was her 34th of the season. Cheney has won 16 consecutive matches since losing to Pullman (15-3), which will advance as the No. 2 seed to state. Pullman will play Tuesday at East Valley (Yakima). … DeeDee Garbe’s two goals lifted West Valley (13-3) over Deer Park 2-1 in other district play, a loser-out match. WV’s win advanced the Eagles to state as the No. 3 seed. Garbe’s first goal came as an answer 1 minute after DP’s goal in the third minute and the second broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. The Stags (8-10-1) led early on a goal by Kaitlin Morrow.
