In brief: Tiger puts on a show to win Down Under
Golf: Tiger Woods has won the Australian Masters for his seventh victory of the year, closing with a 4-under-par 68 in Melbourne for a victory today that record crowds at Kingston Heath came to see.
In his first trip Down Under in 11 years, Woods put on quite a show for his $3 million appearance fee.
He pulled away from a three-way tie for the lead with three birdies on his opening six holes, then seized control with a tee shot that covered the flag and stopped 6 feet away for birdie on the 15th.
•McNeill shares lead with 3 at Disney Classic: George McNeill closed with a double-bogey and will share the lead with three others entering the final round of the Children’s Miracle Network Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
McNeill overcame a five-shot deficit and made two eagles on a cool day at Disney World that made greens fast but easy to reach. He shot a 3-under-par 69 that left him tied at 203 with Justin Leonard (71), Justin Rose (69) and Mathias Gronberg (66) after three rounds.
•Wie, Kerr share LPGA lead: Michelle Wie moved into position for her first LPGA Tour victory, shooting a 2-under-par 70 in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational at Guadalajara, Mexico, for a share of the third-round lead with Cristie Kerr.
Second-round leader Jiyai Shin (74) was a stroke back along with Paula Creamer (71) and first-round leader Song-Hee Kim (70).
Jennings scores 55 in Bucks’ victory
Basketball: Rookie Brandon Jennings scored a career-high 55 points, including 29 in the third quarter, to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a come-from-behind 129-125 victory over the Golden State Warriors at Milwaukee.
Jennings scored 10 points in the final 2:15 to hold off the Warriors and become only the third Bucks player to score more than 50.
•Roy leads Trail Blazers past Bobcats: Brandon Roy scored 25 points, Andre Miller added 15, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Charlotte Bobcats 80-74 at Charlotte, N.C., for their sixth straight victory.
The Blazers (8-3) used a huge run over the second and third quarters to send the Bobcats (3-6) to their fourth straight loss.
•After long delay, Oklahoma St. beats Seattle: James Anderson scored 22 points and Marshall Moses added 17 as Oklahoma State beat Seattle 86-64 at Stillwater, Okla., in a game delayed 1 hour, 40 minutes because officials showed up late.
Charles Garcia scored 18 to lead the Redhawks (0-1) in the debut of coach Cameron Dollar, the former UCLA star. It was Seattle’s first game playing as a Division I team.
•Porter’s 3-pointers help Oregon top UC Davis: Tajuan Porter scored 26 points and set the school record for career 3-pointers in Oregon’s 95-64 victory against UC Davis at Eugene in the BTI Tip-Off Tournament.
Porter came into the game needing three 3-pointers to break the school record of 282 set in 1995 by Orlando Williams. He tied the record and then broke it on back-to-back possessions midway through the first half.
Parise lifts Devils to 8th straight win
Hockey: Zach Parise’s breakaway highlighted a three-goal second period and the New Jersey Devils won their eighth straight game with a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals at Newark, N.J.
Jamie Langenbrunner and rookie Matt Halischuk also scored in the second as the Devils rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat the Capitals for the third time in three games this season.
Real Salt Lake reaches first MLS Cup
Soccer: Real Salt Lake advanced to its first Major League Soccer Cup final by beating the Chicago Fire 5-4 on penalty kicks after 120 scoreless minutes in the Eastern Confer- ence final at Bridgeview, Ill.
Ned Grabavoy, a substitute in the final minute of overtime, scored the winning penalty kick in the seventh round as his shot went off the fingertips of Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch.
RSL will meet Los Angeles in the MLS Cup final on Nov. 22 at Qwest Field in Seattle.
Djokovic, Monfils in final at Paris Masters
Tennis: Novak Djokovic overpowered Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Paris Masters final for the first time.
The Serb will face Gael Monfils of France today. He advanced to the final with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Radek Stepanek.
The third-ranked Djokovic was dominant from the start and didn’t face a single break point en route to the victory over Nadal. Winning 83 percent of first-serve points, Djokovic also had 31 winners.
Couture escapes Vera at UFC 105
Mixed Martial Arts: Brandon Vera took everything UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture had to offer in the clinch, wounded him with several wicked body kicks and mounted him in the closing seconds, only to lose a unanimous decision in the UFC 105 main event at Manchester, England.
The scores were 29-28 across the board for Couture, who narrowly avoided the first three-fight losing streak of his career. Vera stood with a befuddled look on his face when the decision was announced.
In other action, Dan Hardy picked apart Mike Swick en route to a dominating unanimous decision victory, earning himself a shot at welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.
