Sports in brief: Wie earns first LPGA win at Ochoa Invite
Golf: Michelle Wie won the first LPGA event of her career on Sunday, fulfilling the promise of a decade with a 3-under par 69 to win the Lorena Ochoa Invitational by two strokes over Paula Creamer at Guadalajara, Mexico.
Wie finished off the victory in style, hitting a greenside bunker shot to 6 inches on the 18th hole and then tapping in for a birdie.
The 20-year-old Wie raised both arms in the air – her putter in her right hand – and then put her hand over her mouth. After pulling the ball out of the hole, she turned to the gallery, looked to the sky and let out a large sigh of relief.
Morgan Pressel (67), Jiyai Shin (71) and Cristie Kerr (72) were three back. Wie finished a 13-under 275 after starting the day at the Guadalajara Country Club tied for the lead with Kerr at 10 under.
•Ames wins Disney Classic in playoff: Stephen Ames has won his second title in three years at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, edging George McNeill and Justin Leonard in a playoff at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Ames was calm and cool on greens that were too slick for most of the field on a sun-baked Sunday at Disney World. He finished with an 8-under 64 to tie for the clubhouse lead, watching as McNeill (67) and Leonard (67) failed to pass him.
Djokovic wins first Paris Masters title
Tennis: Third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia has won his first Paris Masters title by defeating Gael Monfils of France 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3).
The victory gives the 22-year-old Djokovic back-to-back ATP titles after his win over top-ranked Roger Federer in the Swiss Indoors final last Sunday.
Lakers lose at home to Rockets
NBA: Aaron Brooks scored a career-high 33 points, including five 3-pointers, and the Houston Rockets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 101-91, sending them to a second consecutive loss.
The NBA champion Lakers were coming off a 105-79 drubbing at Denver two nights earlier only to have another team they vanquished in last season’s title run show them up at home, where they got booed.
•Speights out six to eight weeks: Philadelphia 76ers forward Marreese Speights will miss six to eight weeks with a left knee injury.
Speights was injured in the fourth quarter of a 94-88 loss at Chicago on Saturday night. An MRI exam revealed he has a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
No. 6 Duke women fall to Texas A&M
Miscellany: Danielle Adams scored 24 points in her Texas A&M debut and the Aggies stunned No. 6 Duke 95-77 at College Station, Texas.
The Aggies (1-0) took the lead near the midway point of the first half and didn’t trail again. Despite poor shooting, the Blue Devils (1-1) cut the lead to three points with about 14 minutes remaining, but the Aggies scored 10 straight points to make it 65-52 and Duke didn’t threaten again.
•Tennessee beats Baylor: Shekinna Stricklen had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 8 Tennessee beat No. 7 Baylor 74-65 in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic at Knoxville, Tenn.
Angie Bjorklund (University) added 13 points and two assists for the Lady Vols.
•Stanford close to new deal with Harbaugh: Stanford football coach Jim Harbaugh is close to completing a contract extension with the school.
Athletic director Bob Bowlsby said in an e-mail that a formal announcement of a new deal was expected to come shortly. The two sides were close to announcing an extension after last season but talks were put on hold in February because of the poor economy.
•Maradona banned by FIFA for two months: FIFA handed Argentina coach Diego Maradona a two-month ban from all soccer activities for his expletive-filled rants after his team qualified for the 2010 World Cup.
Maradona will miss Argentina’s exhibition against the Czech Republic scheduled for Dec. 16, but he avoided sanctions that would have kept him from coaching at next year’s World Cup in South Africa. He also was fined $24,250.
•Ohno wins at short track World Cup: Apolo Anton Ohno won the 1,000 meters at the short track speedskating World Cup, beating South Korea’s Lee Jung-su in the final at Marquette, Mich.
American Katherine Reutter of the U.S. finished second in the women’s 1,000 behind Meng Wang of China.
•Davis, Nesbitt win World Cup races: Shani Davis won the 1,000-meter World Cup speedskating race for his second individual victory of the weekend at Heerenveen, Netherlands.
Davis finished in 1 minute, 8.48 seconds, edging Simon Kuipers of the Netherlands. Christine Nesbitt of Canada won the women’s 1,000 in 1:15..
In the men’s pursuit, the Netherlands tied for victory with the United States, finishing the 3,200-meters in 3:43.94.
•Herbst wins men’s World Cup slalom: Reinfried Herbst of Austria won the men’s World Cup slalom opener, and American Bode Miller was disqualified in his first race of the season at Levi, Finland.
Herbst posted a two-run time of 1 minute, 49.79 seconds down the Black Course to beat runner-up Ivica Kostelic of Croatia by 0.28 seconds.
Miller barely qualified for the second run, finishing 30th in the opener to gain the last qualifying spot. The former two-time overall champion was disqualified after missing a gate in his second run.
