In brief: Ochoa leads LPGA; Wie out with injury
Golf: Michelle Wie withdrew from the season-ending LPGA Tour Championship in Richmond, Texas, on Thursday because of a sprained left ankle. Hours after, Lorena Ochoa shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-shot lead over Reilley Rankin.
Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot an even-par 72 for a tie for 29th.
•Cook, Browne lead at Pebble Beach: Champions Tour players John Cook and Olin Browne shot 6-under 66s at Del Monte Golf Course to share the first-round lead in the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational.
Cook had six birdies in his bogey-free round.
Browne opened with an eagle, shot 31 on the front nine and had four birdies.
•Allenby leads in Dubai: Robert Allenby of Australia shot a 7-under-par 65 for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Dubai World Championship in the United Aram Emirates, while Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy vied for the European Tour money title.
Allenby had eight birdies and only one bogey on the Earth Course, which is hosting the $7.5 million final event of the European Tour season. He was one shot ahead of Westwood, Chris Wood and Camilo Villegas, who all shot 66.
When the tournament ends Sunday, the top player on the European Tour’s money list will win a $1.5 million bonus from the Race to Dubai.
Bergeron boosts Bruins in shootout
NHL: Patrice Bergeron scored the only goal of the shootout and the visiting Boston Bruins snapped Atlanta’s four-game winning streak, beating the Thrashers 4-3.
The Thrashers at least picked up a point when Maxim Afinogenov scored with 41.4 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
•Ruutu, Jokinen spark Hurricanes: Tuomo Ruutu and Jussi Jokinen scored in the shootout and the Carolina Hurricanes rallied from three goals down to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-5 in Raleigh, N.C.
Williams reportedly takes deal in shooting
NBA: Retired NBA star Jayson Williams has agreed to a plea deal in Trenton, N.J., that would send him to prison for up to three years for accidentally shooting a driver at his New Jersey estate in 2002, a person with knowledge of the case told the Associated Press.
Williams was to face a retrial in January on a reckless manslaughter count.
•Gasol, Lakers win: Pau Gasol had 24 points and 13 rebounds in his season debut, and Kobe Bryant scored 21 points while passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the Lakers’ career scoring chart in host Los Angeles’ 108-93 victory over the Chicago Bulls.
With a free throw in the third quarter, Bryant passed Abdul-Jabbar (24,276) for second place on the Lakers’ career scoring list, leaving him trailing only Jerry West (25,192).
•Jazz end decade of losing in San Antonio: Deron Williams scored 21 points and the Utah Jazz ended their decade-long misery in San Antonio with a 90-83 win over the Spurs.
Utah had not won a regular-season game in San Antonio since 1999, a losing streak that spanned 20 games. Paul Millsap added 20 points for the Jazz.
•Iverson clears waivers: Allen Iverson has cleared waivers and is free to sign with any NBA team.
Cowboys escape Buffaloes’ upset bid
Football: Third-string quarterback Brandon Weeden threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the second half, leading No. 12 Oklahoma State back from an 11-point deficit for a 31-28 win against Colorado (3-8, 2-5 Big 12) in Stillwater, Okla.
With starter Zac Robinson injured and backup Alex Cate ineffective, Weeden took over in the second half and got the offense going for the Cowboys (9-2, 6-1).
•Swarbrick plans quick decision on Weis: Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick plans to make a decision on the future of coach Charlie Weis within days of the season’s end.
Swarbrick said he will take into account more than Weis’ 35-25 record, which is the same winning percentage as his two predecessors.
•Kansas to investigate allegations of abuse: University of Kansas officials are willing to talk with former players about allegations of abusive behavior by football coach Mark Mangino.
The university this week confirmed that it is investigating allegations of verbal and emotional abuse by Mangino, the 2007 national coach of the year.
•Bills sign QB: The Buffalo Bills plucked Brian Brohm off Green Bay’s practice squad, signing the 2008 second-round draft pick to a two-year contract.
•Portis out for second week: Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will miss his second straight game as he recovers from a concussion.
Orange impressive over Golden Bears
College basketball: Scoop Jardine scored a career-high 22 points, Wes Johnson had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Syracuse (3-0) raced past No. 13 California (2-1) 95-73 in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic in New York.
•Tar Heels outlast Buckeyes: Deon Thompson had 15 points and 12 rebounds and No. 6 North Carolina managed to hold on for a 77-73 victory over No. 15 Ohio State (2-1) in the 2K Sports Classic semifinals in New York.
The Tar Heels (4-0), who led by 19 points with 10:23 to play, will face Syracuse in tonight’s championship game of the tournament that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.
•Barlow lifts Irish over Spartans: Ashley Barlow scored 18 points and hit a tiebreaking free throw with 10 seconds left, lifting No. 5 Notre Dame to a 68-67 women’s victory over No. 21 Michigan State (1-2) in East Lansing, Mich.
The Spartans had a chance to win after Barlow’s late foul shot for the Fighting Irish (2-0), but Aisha Jefferson missed a jumper with 4 seconds to go.
Rusty Wallace Racing to field Toyotas
Auto racing: Rusty Wallace Racing is moving its Nationwide Series team from Chevrolet to Toyota next season.
Wallace, who is a NASCAR analyst for ESPN, also will represent the Toyota brand on a national basis.
