Sports in brief: Birdies boost Brooks at Pebble Beach
GOLF: Mark Brooks won the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational for a record third time, birdieing three of the last four holes Sunday for a 5-under 67 and a two-stroke victory over Rickie Fowler and D.A. Points in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Brooks, 48, the 1996 PGA champion, had a 12-under 276 total and became the first three-time winner in the tournament’s 38-year history. The seven-time PGA Tour winner also won the unofficial event in 1992 and 2002.
Fowler, 20, closed with a 69, and Points birdied the final two holes en route a 65 – the best round of the day at Pebble Beach.
Brooks earned $60,000 from the $300,000 purse.
Mina Harigae shot a 68 to finish at 6 under. She was the only one of the four women in the field to make the cut.
•Westwood wins at Dubai: Lee Westwood of England became Europe’s No. 1 golfer by winning the Dubai World Championship by six strokes.
Westwood shot a course-record 8-under 64 in the final round at the Earth Course to finish at 23-under 265.
He earned $1.25 million with the 31st victory of his career to overtake Rory McIlroy on the season-long money list and win the European Tour’s first Race to Dubai since it changed from the European Order of Merit.
Ross McGowan of England was second after a 68.
•McPherson takes lead at LPGA Championship: Kristy McPherson finished off a 5-under 67 in fading sunlight Sunday to take a one-stroke lead in the LPGA Tour Championship before the second round at Richmond, Texas, was suspended because of darkness.
McPherson was 8 under, one shot ahead of Jiyai Shin – the South Korean star who had two holes to play. Lorena Ochoa, dueling with Shin for the player of the year title, was two strokes back in a tie for third with one hole to play.
Heavy rain swamped the course Friday and Saturday, forcing tournament officials to cut the tournament to 54 holes.
Lady Vols rally to win behind Bjorklund
Basketball: A record crowd at Virginia was nothing unusual for No. 6 Tennessee to face, and with Angie Bjorklund (University HS) getting her shooting stroke working, the Lady Vols rolled 77-63 on Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.
Bjorklund scored 24 points and hit the biggest shot of the game, a 3-pointer early in the second half to halt a rally by the 12th-ranked Cavaliers. It also quieted the crowd of 11,895 that was lured in by a promotion designed to set a new attendance mark for the women’s program, and provide a boost for the underdog Cavaliers.
Bjorklund’s shot with 18:14 left came after Virginia had closed to within 42-39, and she was fouled and completed the four-point play. When Taber Spani followed with a 3-pointer, the Lady Vols’ lead was back to 10.
Tennessee (3-0) avenged a loss on its own home floor to Virginia last season.
•Baylor beats up on Cal: Brittney Griner had her chance to dunk in the waning minutes and missed again. It didn’t matter much.
Baylor’s 6-foot-8 freshman sensation did enough work to alter shots on the defensive end in the eighth-ranked Lady Bears’ 69-49 rout of No. 17 California, a highly anticipated matchup pitting two of the country’s top young teams in Berkeley, Calif.
Griner had 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots, missing a right-handed dunk along the baseline off a behind-the-back pass from Melissa Jones with 2:08 remaining.
•Garcia leads Seattle over Weber St: Charles Garcia had 20 of his 27 points in the first half to help lead Seattle University to a 91-87 home victory over Weber State.
Aaron Broussard added 17 points and Cervante Burrell had 15 for Seattle (2-2).
Seattle is playing its first full Division I schedule since 1980.
•Bird, Magic inducted together: Larry Bird and Magic Johnson have been linked since their epic 1979 NCAA title game. Now they’re going into college basketball’s hall of fame together.
Bird and Johnson were inducted into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame in Kansas City. The honor comes 30 years after Johnson’s Michigan State team beat Bird and Indiana State in a game that reshaped college basketball.
•Garnett beats buzzer to lift Celtics: Kevin Garnett made a jumper to beat the overtime buzzer, giving the visiting Boston Celtics a 107-105 victory over the New York Knicks.
Paul Pierce scored a season-high 33 points, and had all of Boston’s points in overtime until the final shot. Two Knicks followed Pierce on the final play, leaving Garnett wide open from the top of the key for his 19-footer.
Federer rallies to win at ATP Finals
Tennis: Roger Federer overcame an erratic forehand and Fernando Verdasco, rallying to beat the Spanish opponent 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the round-robin stage of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The top-ranked Federer was broken only once — in the opening game of the Group A match — but he never looked dominating until late in the second set when he converted his first break point to even the score at one set apiece.
In the early Group A match, Andy Murray overcame a second-set slump to beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
In Group B, Rafael Nadal will play Robin Soderling on Monday in the first singles match of the day. Novak Djokovic then faces Nikolay Davydenko.
