Meets The mayor of Quebec City, Quebec, has spoken with the National Hockey League about the possible return of the Nordiques to the NHL. Mayor Regis Labeaume said Saturday he met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman along with former Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut and the talks were “very profitable, very worthwhile.”
Injured The Minnesota Twins have taken third baseman Matt Tolbert off their division series roster because of a strained left oblique muscle. He will be replaced on the roster by Brian Buscher.
•Injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa will drive a car at the Formula One team’s test track after a positive outcome to a series of neurological exams. The Brazilian is trying to come back from life-threatening injuries he sustained at the Hungarian GP in July.
Appeals The University of Memphis has filed its appeal to the NCAA, criticizing the reasoning behind sanctions that stripped the Tigers of their 38 men’s basketball wins in the 2007-2008 season. The brief argues that the penalties and its reasoning are unprecedented and improper. The school particularly targets the so-called “strict liability” standard imposed after the NCAA ruled Derrick Rose was retroactively ineligible because of an SAT score that was invalidated in May 2008.
Recovering Phillies left-hander Jamie Moyer is recovering at a Philadelphia hospital from a blood infection. Moyer’s wife, Karen, said that her husband is fine now after an infection following abdominal surgery.
Died One of the original owners of the Milwaukee Bucks, Marvin Fishman, died Friday at a southeast Wisconsin hospital following a stroke. He was 84. Fishman was instrumental in raising money to bring the Bucks to Milwaukee in 1968.
Named The Carrier Dome field was named Ernie Davis Legends Field in a halftime ceremony featuring former Syracuse great Jim Brown and Martin Luther King III. The tribute to the 1961 Heisman Trophy winner comes a year after the release of a movie about his life called “The Express.” Davis was the first black player to win the Heisman. He died of leukemia before playing a game in the NFL.
