Fined The NBA is making Gilbert Arenas – and the Washington Wizards – pay for his silence. Arenas and his team were fined $25,000 apiece Tuesday by the league because the three-time All-Star point guard has not been talking to the media during the preseason, including before and after exhibition games.
Hospitalized Former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch underwent hospital exams after feeling ill at a sports conference. The 89-year-old Spaniard, who headed the IOC from 1980 to 2001, was attending the Sportel international sports television festival in Monaco.
Scheduled The Seattle Mariners say catcher Rob Johnson has a series of offseason surgeries ahead. He’s scheduled to have surgery Friday on his left hip at Vail, Colo., and have the same procedure three weeks later on his right hip. Following rehab, he’ll have surgery in Seattle on his left wrist.
Suspended New Mexico football coach Mike Locksley has been suspended one game and will miss 10 days as punishment for striking an assistant coach. Locksley initially was reprimanded, but athletic director Paul Krebs said the coach will not be allowed to have any contact with the team through Oct. 24.
•Purdue guard Lewis Jackson has been suspended for two exhibition games and the season opener for violating team and NCAA rules.
Recovering Washington Nationals closer Mike MacDougal, who began his pro career with the Spokane Indians, had arthroscopic surgery on his right hip and is expected to be fully recovered by spring training.
Signed The Baltimore Ravens signed former Super Bowl hero David Tyree, who played in 73 games with the New York Giants before being cut last month.
Retired Two-time Olympic champion Hermann Maier retired, ending a career in which he became one of Alpine skiing’s most prolific racers and almost lost a leg in a motorcycle accident in 2001. Maier, 36, cited surgery on his right knee in the offseason as the main reason for his retirement.
