Spokane to take part in Global Climate Change Rally Saturday
Spokane will participate in one of 2,000 rallies worldwide Saturday which center upon raising awareness of climate change concerns.
The rally begins at noon at the blue Howard Street Bridge in Riverfront Park. Participants will march through downtown and finish at the Community Building, 35 W. Main, where there will be a youth-led teach-in about local actions being taken to combat climate change.
Along the way, marchers will pose for a photo which will be sent to 350.org, and shown alongside similar global day of climate action gatherings in dozens of countries. The simultaneous event is being promoted as the most widespread day of climate action in history.
350.org is coordinating the global event which is designed to educate local communities about climate science and also persuade world leaders to take effective action on climate change. The number 350 refers to the 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide, considered the safe upper limit for the atmosphere, rather than the current level of 390 parts per million.
The Spokane-area event is hosted by members of the Youth Sustainability Council from Community-Minded Enterprises.
Following the event, participants can also join in creating an art installation with recycled materials.
Other related events taking place that day include climbers with 350 banners on Mount Everest and an underwater cabinet meeting in the Maldives Islands.
Photos and video from the event will be available at: http://www.facebook.com/spokaneysc or at www.community-minded.org. Photos from other events can be seen at: http://350.org/media
