’Cats, Panthers titlists

Needing a win to earn at least a share of the Greater Spokane League title, the Mead girls soccer team jumped out to a lead against Ferris (5-10, 3-7) Friday with a goal in the second minute by Jill Pecka.

The Panthers (11-1, 9-1) added two more in the second half to win 3-0 at Ferris.

Joining the Panthers atop the GSL standings was Mt. Spokane after the Wildcats (13-1, 9-1) closed their season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Rogers. Four Wildcats scored in the match.

The teams will part ways for the postseason, with the Panthers playing in the District 8 4A tournament and Mt. Spokane advancing directly to the 3A regional tournament.

In other GSL matches: visiting Lewis and Clark (12-3, 9-1) shut out Shadle Park (5-9, 3-7) 3-0 to finish third in the GSL standings with 26 points. In taking their sixth shutout of the season, the Tigers finished just one point behind the co-champions Mead and Mt. Spokane. … Kayla Imes scored two of three second-half goals for University (10-5, 7-3), which shut out East Valley (4-8, 4-6) 3-0 at EV. … Gonzaga Prep (9-4, 6-4) scored twice in the first half on goals by Jessica Bennett and Mary Condon and held on to beat Central Valley 2-1 at CV.

Volleyball

Greater Spokane League: Mead (10-0) put the finishing touches on an undefeated season, sweeping North Central (3-7) 25-4, 25-19, 25-19 at Mead. Chelsey Pangborn and Kuulei Zalopany led the Panthers with six kills each with multiple players seeing action in the season’s final match. … East Valley (4-6) swept Rogers (0-10) 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 at EV. Alyssa Dorr led the Knights with 17 assists.
