EWU Press will close

The Eastern Washington University Press will close next summer due to budget cuts the university had to make this past year.

The press publishes scholarly works, books about the region’s history and culture, poetry and other books.

“This was obviously a very difficult decision,” said Dave Meany, media relations director for EWU. “The press will continue to do business until June 30, 2010.”

The press began in the 1970s as a means to present scholarly research. In the 1990s, the press started publishing works for a larger audience. It also started “Get Lit!,” an annual literary festival that brings authors from around the world to speak.

Get Lit! will continue to be held every year, but the College of Arts and Letters will take over its organization.

Meany said the press will honor contracts with authors.

He also said that the press employed five or six people in recent years and is now down to a couple of employees.

“We had to make hard choices,” Meany said.
