Hawaii rallies to top Zags

Hawaii rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to beat Gonzaga 6-5 in the finale of a three-game series Sunday in Honolulu.

Andy Hunter went 2 for 4 with four RBIs for the Bulldogs (11-15). Chris Sturdivant, Mark Castellitto and Clayton Elsick each drove in a run for Gonzaga.

Jeremy Stumetz took the loss for Gonzaga, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing six runs – four earned – on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Gonzaga led 4-1 before the Warriors’ comeback in the eighth. With one out, Matt Roquemore walked, and Greg Garcia followed with a single. Kolten Wong then hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 4.

David Freitas then flied out for the second out of the inning. Collin Bennett followed with a single, and Kevin Macdonald’s double drove him home to give Hawaii the lead. Sean Montplaisir then reached on error and Macdonald crossed home for an unearned run.

The Bulldogs return home Tuesday to open a two-game set against Washington. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Gonzaga held off a Hawaii rally for a 7-6 win. Drew Heid had three hits and drove in two runs, and Andy Hunter had two hits and two RBIs.

Ryan Carpenter (2-3) earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out seven and walked four.

Mark Phillips earned his first save of the season, entering the game with two on and nobody out in the ninth. The Warriors scored three times in the ninth to make it a one-run game before Phillips induced a game-ending double play with two men on.
