BYU defeats WSU 3-2

Brandon Relf homered in the bottom of the eighth to give Brigham Young a 3-2 nonconference baseball win over Washington State in Provo, Utah on Monday.

Derek Jones gave WSU (15-10) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a home run and Brady Steiger’s two-out, pinch-hit single in the top of the eighth tied it at 2 before Relf won it for BYU (13-14).

•Gonzaga’s Mark Castellitto, who had one of the best performances in the country – 28 for 69 (.406) with seven doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 24 RBIs – is a West Coast Conference co-player of the month for March.

The Bulldogs’ Cody Martin is WCC pitcher of the week after striking out 10 and allowing just three hits and two unearned runs in a 3-1 loss in Hawaii.

Boys golf

Mitch Rummer of Deer Park and Drew Cowbrough of Colville shared medalist honors with 3-over-par 72s in the Stag Kickoff at Deer Park Golf Course.

Mt. Spokane (419) bested Deer Park (420) and North Central (421) as just two strokes separated the top three teams.

High School baseball

Clarkston’s Great Northern League doubleheader at Cheney was postponed and rescheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Post Falls at Lake City was also postponed. No makeup date was announced.
