Prep roundup: G-Prep, Mead lead the way
Gonzaga Prep and Mead continued to set the pace in Greater Spokane League boys soccer with easy wins Wednesday.
Justin Gates scored the first goal and set up the second, and Kieran Abbotts added two assists as G-Prep (6-0, 4-0) rolled to a 3-0 win over visiting North Central (2-3, 0-3).
Ben Doggett scored twice as Mead (6-1, 4-0) registered a 5-1 win at Mt. Spokane (0-7, 0-4).
G-Prep and Mead don’t play until April 28. Mead has a tough home match against Ferris on Friday.
Also in the GSL, Joseph Guerrinha set up Devin Allen for a goal on the first shot of the game and scored at 79 minutes to give Central Valley (5-1, 3-1) a 2-0 win over visiting East Valley (2-5, 1-3). … Junior Josh Sharon scored three times, Alec Cutter scored twice and Brandon Barber had three second-half assists to lead Ferris (3-4, 3-1) to a 6-1 win over visiting Rogers (1-4, 0-3). … Gabe Kohler had two assists, including setting up Christian Foster’s header at 54 minutes with a corner kick, to give host Lewis and Clark (5-4, 2-2) a 2-0 win over Shadle Park (2-3, 1-1) at Hart Field.
Baseball
Daniel Hammersley struck out five in six innings and David Borgman had a leadoff homer to carry Central Valley (8-0) to a 10-1 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (0-6) in the Greater Spokane League. Dane Berg added a two-run homer and Corey Mack went 3 for 3 for the Bears.
•Pete Hoffman struck out seven in four innings and went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to lead Lake City (6-4, 2-2) to a five-inning 19-3 win over visiting Post Falls (2-6, 1-4) in Inland Empire League 5A play. Jason Pattis added three RBIs for the Timberwolves.
•Mike Torkelson hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Cheney (6-1, 4-0) scored four runs in the sixth after two outs to complete a 3-2, 8-7 Great Northern League sweep over visiting Clarkston (3-2, 0-2). Matt Walker struck out four and Parker Franklin scored the winner on a wild pitch in the seventh to help the Blackhawks in the opener. In the second game, Clarkston started the seventh with three singles to pull within one run, but Cheney held on. … Brett Druffel had four RBIs in the second game as host Pullman (3-5, 2-2) defeated West Valley 17-3 in five innings to earn a split. In the opener, Kneight Johnson and Ben Foster hit three-run homers to lead the Eagles (4-2, 3-1) to a 14-4 five-inning win.
•Gaige Gray singled home the winning run in the seventh as host Lakeland (4-3, 2-1) defeated Sandpoint (3-4, 0-2) 4-3 in IEL 4A play at Rathdrum. Caleb Guerber had three hits and scored the winning run.
Softball
Regin Gallagher went 3 for 5 with two doubles, and Jill Pecka finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs to guide Mead (7-0) to a nine-inning 6-4 win at Central Valley in the Greater Spokane League. Jenna Gaskin went 2 for 4 for the Bears (3-3).
