NC, CV win at Mooberry

Ben Johnston won the Lindgren Mile and helped North Central earn a win with a leg in the distance medley as the Indians scored 98 points to lead the field in the boys events while Central Valley won the girls title with 79 points as athletes from 47 teams competed Saturday at the Mooberry Relays at Gonzaga Prep.

Chewelah’s Will Lohman was named athlete of the meet for his wins in the discus (158 feet, 7 inches), shot put (57-3) and team hammer throw, combining with Will Peters for a distance of 255-2. NC’s Katie Knight joined Johnson as the Lindgren winner in the girls race.

•Mead senior Baylee Mires took third in the mile invitational run with a time of 4 minutes 54.39 seconds at the Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational. Mires came back an hour later to finish fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:13.29.

Also for the Panthers, senior A.J. Maracich took second in the high jump, clearing 6-11.

•Coeur d’Alene Charter had a pair of three-win athletes in Jacob Bowman (100, 200 and long jump) and Dominique Billingslea (100, 200, 400) at the Freeman Interstate Rivals meet.

Behind Billingslea, the Panthers finished second to Central Valley (136-118 points).

Colville took first in boys events, scoring 139.83 points on the strength of its relay teams, which won the 400 and 1,600.

Baseball

Cameron Lowe allowed three hits and no earned runs, facing four batters more than the minimum, to lift Cheney to a 12-2 win over Colville (5-5, 3-3) in the opener and the Blackhawks (8-1, 6-0) made it a sweep in Great Northern League play, winning 19-9 in the nightcap in Cheney.

Sean Scholer had four hits in the second game with three RBIs and Matt Walker added a two-run homer for the Blackhawks.

In other GNL games, Brett Druffel earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in the opener, and Pullman (5-5, 4-2) used a nine-run third inning in the second game to earn the sweep over Deer Park (1-6, 0-4) 10-2, 11-3 in Pullman. … Brady Arnone blasted a pair of home runs, finishing with five hits and seven RBIs over two games, and added a one-hit shutout in the opener as Clarkston (6-2, 2-2) cruised to a 15-0, 12-2 sweep of Riverside (1-9, 0-6) in Clarkston. … Mitch Peterson’s grand slam and five RBIs propelled West Valley (5-3, 4-2) to a 15-1 win in the second game to give the Eagles a split after falling 7-4 to Medical Lake (4-1, 1-1) in the opener at WV.

•Johnny Rake homered in the opener of Lewiston’s Inland Empire League doubleheader against Coeur d’Alene (8-6, 0-2) and went the distance to earn the win in the second game as the Bengals (15-0, 6-0) swept the Vikings 21-8, 13-8 in Coeur d’Alene. Devon Austin had four hits on the day for the Vikings, hitting a double and a pair of home runs.

•Kyle Bradbury struck out 16 and allowed three runs on two hits and added a key two-run triple during a four-run fifth inning in the opener as Priest River (4-6, 2-0) handed Intermountain League foe Kellogg (3-6, 1-3) a pair of losses, 6-3 and 11-7 in Kellogg.

In other IML games, Jaden Guidry had four hits and four RBIs and pitched a four-hit shutout in the opening game of St. Maries’ (3-8, 3-1) 6-0, 5-1 sweep of host Timberlake (4-5, 2-2) in Spirit Lake.

Softball

Candice Boyd went 5 for 5 with three RBIs to lead West Valley (6-2, 3-1) to a pair of five-inning wins over Medical Lake (0-8, 0-2) 11-0, 10-0 in Great Northern League action at WV.

Kelli Peckham (five-inning no-hitter) and Rachel Meagley pitched shutouts for the Eagles, combining to strike out 22 batters in 10 innings.

In other GNL games, Leanna Carr went 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored the winning run in the 10th to lift Colville (5-0, 4-0) to a 3-2 win in the opener, and Makayla Carr added 10 strikeouts and allowed two hits in a 12-2 win in the second game as the Indians swept Cheney (2-3, 0-2) in Cheney. … Kandice Lelifeld pitched seven scoreless innings to help Deer Park (5-1, 1-1) salvage a split against Pullman (5-4, 2-2), winning 6-0 after falling 5-4 in the opener in Pullman. The Greyhounds needed three runs in the sixth to rally, getting a two-run homer from Becca Holmbo before Baley Nash scored the go-ahead run on an error. … Riverside (5-4, 1-3) erupted for 14 hits to take the opener 11-1 in five innings, but Clarkston (3-3, 1-1) rallied to take the second game 3-2 in Clarkston.

•Elli Tindall had four RBIs, including three on a double in the second inning, as Coeur d’Alene (11-2, 1-1) split its Inland Empire League doubleheader against Lewiston (10-6, 2-4), winning 8-5 after falling 8-2 in the opener in Coeur d’Alene. The Bengals scored five runs in the first inning of the second game, but CdA rallied to score eight unanswered for the win.

•Michaela Stewart had two hits, including a two-run single to cap a six-run third, as Kellogg (3-3, 2-2) knocked off Priest River (1-5, 0-2) 6-4 after a 9-4 victory in the opener of their Intermountain League doubleheader in Kellogg.

Tennis

Ethan Vaughn finished as the No. 1 boys singles champion and Mead took second with 191 points at the Tri-City Invite in Kennewick. Hanford won the Invite championship with 204 points.
