Re-signed The Minnesota Vikings re-signed backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson Monday as they wait for Brett Favre to decide if he will return for another season. Jackson was a restricted free agent who was given a one-year tender worth $1.176 million. The fifth-year team veteran has 19 career starts with 21 career touchdowns passing and four rushing.
Extended Commentator Chris Berman has signed a multiyear contract extension to stay with ESPN. The network said he would remain its host for NFL studio shows. Berman will continue to call baseball’s Home Run Derby and host ESPN’s U.S. Open golf coverage, among other duties.
Elected Former soccer star Kyle Rote Jr., the North American Soccer League’s 1973 rookie of the year, has been elected to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame on the veteran ballot. Rote was a forward for Dallas (1972-78) and Houston (1979), and made five appearances for the U.S. national team from 1973-75.
Declaring BYU guard Jimmer Fredette is entering his name in the 2010 NBA draft but will keep his college eligibility by not hiring an agent. An All-American, Fredette led BYU to a record 30 wins in the 2009-10 season and a first-round win in the NCAA tournament – the team’s first since 1993.
Skipping Tennis star Rafael Nadal is skipping the Barcelona Open this week to rest, which means he won’t defend his title at a tournament he has won the past five years. Nadal said he has often complained that the clay court tennis schedule at this stage of the season “is poorly structured” and that “not playing in Barcelona is a consequence of that.”
Resigned Rutgers basketball coach Fred Hill has resigned. The university told Hill he would not return to his coaching job after an incident in which he yelled at Pittsburgh coaches following an April 1 baseball game at Rutgers, then disobeyed a school official and returned to another game against Pitt. Rutgers’ baseball team is coached by Hill’s father.
