In brief: Opera hosts gala and silent auction

COEUR D’ALENE – Opera Coeur d’Alene’s annual “Opera Gala” will be tonight at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. Doors open at 5 p.m. with no-host beverages, followed by a gourmet dinner.

The evening will feature the murder mystery, “A Taste for Wine, Murder, and Opera.” The performance may include gala attendees and the killer may be a member of the audience.

The event also will include a silent auction with works by local artists; restaurant dinner certificates; theater tickets and a Coeur d’Alene Resort package. Proceeds from the event will support the opera and its education outreach programs.

College celebrates world’s activities

COEUR D’ALENE – North Idaho College will hold several cultural activities to celebrate “Experience the World Week,” beginning Monday and running through Thursday.

On Monday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Edminster Student Union Building Ts’elusm Dining Room, experience the world with a demonstration of games played around the world, including bocci ball, croquet and dominoes.

Michael Moon Bear, the music director of Malidoma World Music and Dance and the drumming instructor at Havermale High School in Spokane, will present a drumming demonstration Tuesday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Edminster Student Union Building’s Blue Creek Bay Room. The demonstration will include Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Middle Eastern and West African drumming. Attendees will have an opportunity to play the drums.

Folk band Silk Road will perform on Tuesday in the Edminster Student Union Building Activities Center at 7:30 p.m. The family band performs music from China, Tibet, Mongolia, central Asia and the Balkans of Eastern Europe.

The Celtic Knots, a Spokane-based acoustic band, will perform Celtic music in the Edminster Student Union Building Activities Center on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Eddie Nelson, the NIC Dining Services supervisor, will present a cultural cooking demonstration on Thursday in the Edminster Student Union Building kitchen at 2 p.m. Space is limited. To reserve a spot, e-mail jenelson@nic.edu.

The cultural events will wrap up with an salsa dance party “Salsa Magic” at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Edminster Student Union Building Activities Center.

Senior fitness class to start in mid-May

COEUR D’ALENE – Kootenai Health will offer “Fit and Fall Proof,” a free series of twice-weekly fitness classes for seniors, May 11 through July 2, at Kootenai Medical Center. Classes will meet on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m.

The classes will focus on helping older people achieve and maintain functional fitness skills to support independent, active lifestyles.
