Lee comments harsh

The Spokesman-Review

I read with interest Greg Lee’s April 22 article (“Kellogg residents … ”) about the Kellogg School District and the community not funding a levy, which means sports will have cuts. I felt the article was very harsh.

While some of the savings mentioned was “only $50,000” it may interest Greg in knowing what that money may represent. It could mean a full-time teacher with an aide. It could mean a new math series of textbooks that are probably overdue. It could mean a used bus.

I will be the first to admit that sports are an extension of the educational process. But the school boards and districts are responsible to educate children and the classroom comes first. In these hard times it is not responsible to go to the public with our hands out.

Maybe a better idea is to have the sports fans come up with ideas to help fund school sports. Maybe sportswriters should pony up as well.

I have faith that our community will step up, but I would never ask for a bailout to include non-educational issues. We aren’t a bank, after all. We are fiscally responsible people who are dealing with a state that does not always make education a real priority.

I feel for the people of Kellogg as it may be all of us soon. I would like to invite Mr. Lee to a St. Maries board meeting. His input would be appreciated.
