Softball contests offer few surprises

There were few surprises during the double-elimination tournaments that concluded the Spokane Valley Girls Softball season.

Top-three seeds generally reached the semifinals and finals of the four tournaments, with top-two ranked teams playing for three of the championships, some needing two games.

Commercial Battery came back to beat Home Run Construction twice for the 18U title and Megawash needed two games to secure the 12U crown. Baker Construction in 12U and UNICEP in 10U swept their tournaments.

18U: Commercial Battery and Home Run Construction tied for the regular season title with 9-1 records. Both won twice to gain the tourney semifinals, Home Run winning 9-5. But Commercial Battery came back for a pair of wins, including 10-6 to force the second game that determined the championship and capped a 13-2 season. Home Run Construction finished 12-3.

14U: Top-seeded Baker Construction swept three games to finish 12-1 overall this season. The team beat Spokane Packaging 19-8, slipped past Marz Mountain 10-7 to reach the finals and whipped No. 2 seed Flying J 14-4 for the crown. Flying J (12-4), lost in the second round of the tournament and wound up playing six tournament games.

12U: The 14-team tournament took 26 games to play out, but Megawash prevailed despite losing for the only time this season. Megawash and Planet Beach entered the tourney with 10-0 regular season records.

The eventual champions added three more victories to reach the finals, but Planet Beach lost 15-7 in the semis and later 9-8, both to Woodcraft, finishing third and 13-2 for the year.

Woodcraft, 7-3 during the regular season, won its first three games before suffering an 11-4 setback to Megawash in the semis. But the team forced a second title game by handing Megawash its lone setback this season, 6-3.

Megawash (14-1) won 12-1 in the rematch. Woodcraft wound up 5-2 in the tournament and 12-5 overall.

10U: Second-seeded UNICEP twice defeated McDonald’s which had entered the 15-team tournament unbeaten. First win was 15-3 in the semifinals handing McDonald’s its first loss after 12 straight victories. Second was 16-9 for the crown. The champs were 5-0 during the tourney and finished 14-1 for the year. McDonald’s ended up 13-2.
