Seattle holds tough during Idaho’s late rally

SEATTLE – Seattle University’s men’s basketball team defeated Idaho 66-56 in the 2010 Elgin Baylor Classic on Saturday at KeyArena.

Guard Cervante Burrell scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half while forward Aaron Broussard added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The victory broke the Vandals’ (5-4) five-game winning streak over the Redhawks.

Seattle (4-8) appeared ready to run away with the game in the opening half. Leading 37-29, it took grinding teamwork after the break to pull out the home win for the Redhawks.

Idaho took its first lead off a 3-pointer by senior guard Jeff Ledbetter with 7:40 remaining in the game. Burrell, a junior, made sure SU responded, slicing through defenders for a dazzling layin.

Later, when the Vandals again challenged the Redhawks’ lead, Burrell cut through the paint to score a needed bucket. Teammates Brossard and Alex Jones (nine points, seven rebounds) provided the defensive presence to keep Idaho from scoring off offensive rebounds down the stretch.

Idaho used an 8-3 run to open the second half to close within 40-37 with 15:07 remaining after a spinning layin by Luiz Toledo in the paint and a two-handed jam by Kyle Barone.

But errors, many forced by SU’s defense, kept the Vandals from taking control of the game.

SU freshman guard Mark McLaughlin was an early instigator for the Redhawks, scoring on a fast-break layup and picking off an Idaho dribble at half court for another layin with 12:29 left in the game to make the score 47-39.

Seattle travels to play at Eastern Washington on Wednesday.
