Reported ESPN.com reported Sunday that Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony would only accept a long-term extension if it came with a trade to the New York Knicks. The Nuggets offered him one worth about $65 million over three years during the summer, but he has said he wanted to keep his options open. He can become a free agent next summer, but Denver would likely attempt to trade him before rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Hired The Miami Hurricanes have hired Al Golden as their new football coach. Golden accepted an offer to replace Randy Shannon, the school announced late Sunday. Shannon was fired Nov. 27 after the Hurricanes completed a 7-5 regular season. Golden, 41, has led a turnaround at once-moribund Temple, winning 17 games in the past two seasons.

Leaving Memphis junior forward Angel Garcia will leave the 13th-ranked Tigers at the end of the fall semester and sign a professional contract in Spain. Coach Josh Pastner announced Garcia’s plans. The 6-foot-11 Garcia will complete his final exams first. Garcia says this is a very difficult decision with Memphis being his home the past three years. But Garcia said in a statement through the school that he got an offer to help his family financially that he couldn’t refuse.

Released Former tennis player Martina Navratilova was released from the hospital, three days after her fluid-filled lungs forced her to abandon her attempt to climb Africa’s highest mountain. The 54-year-old tennis great was carried down Mount Kilimanjaro on a stretcher Thursday night and Friday morning. Navratilova said she knew by Wednesday she wouldn’t be able to reach the summit of the 19,340-foot mountain in Tanzania. Navratilova reached nearly 14,800 feet when a doctor with the climbing team told her she needed to descend.

Lose San Francisco has been told it will lose the right to host the next America’s Cup unless a deal is signed by Friday. The warning came in a letter the Golden Gate Yacht Club sent to Mayor Gavin Newsom and other officials on Saturday. America’s Cup official Stephen Barclay said the Port Commission recently changed key points in the agreement that would put too much of a financial risk on the America’s Cup Event Authority.
