Wrestling: Saxons lose one, win one

Clayton Schmidt got the Shadle Park Highlanders rolling in the 145-pound weight class, pinning Ferris’ Clayton Paull, and SP defeated the Saxons (2-2) 49-24 in their Greater Spokane League dual Tuesday at Ferris.

Starting with Schmidt, the Highlanders (1-3) earned wins in their first four matches to take a 19-0 lead and never looked back.

The Saxons bounced back later in the day against Rogers (0-3), beating the Pirates 61-18 at Ferris.

Ferris recorded six pins and two technical falls in the dual, led by 135-pounder Kaleb Michel, who notched his second fall of the day in the Saxons’ penultimate match against Rogers.

In other area wrestling action, Deer Park advanced to the semifinals with three dual victories at the Best of the West tournament in Pasco.

Shawn Burton led the Stags in the 285-pound weight class with a trio of first-round pins as they swept duals against Kiona-Benton (39-30), Wenatchee (46-27) and Chiawana (45-28).

DP advances to face La Grande (Ore.) today in the semifinals. Also, Hermiston (Ore.) will match up with Centralia (Wash.).
