Bothum sets mark
Idaho’s Mykael Bothum shattered the meet record in the women’s shot put and Washington State’s Jasmine Johnson-McKeown won an unlikely double Friday night at the 35th annual Vandal Indoor track and field meet at Kibbie Dome.
Bothum, an Idaho senior, pushed the shot out 55 feet, 43/4 inches to add almost 2 feet to the meet standard she set a year ago. She won the event by more than 8 feet.
Johnson-McKeown won the women’s 60-meter dash in 7.69 seconds, just ahead of teammate Cindy Robinson. Earlier in the day, the freshman heptathlete won the discus throw with a best of 158-8, topping Bothum by 3 feet.
On the men’s side, former Vandals standout Russ Winger returned and won two events in familiar fashion, putting the shot 64-93/4 and throwing the discus 193-8.
The vertical jumps produced two of the most hotly contested events. WSU’s Kendall Mays and Idaho’s K.C. Dahlgren both earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the women’s pole vault by clearing 13-41/4, with Mays winning on the basis of fewer misses. And Whitworth’s Cody Stelzer took the men’s high jump on a similar countback over two other jumpers at 6-83/4.

Washington State coach Paul Wulff added another piece to the incoming class of 2010, with wide receiver Isiah Burton signing his letter of intent. Burton, a junior college transfer from Fresno City College, is a 6-foot-1 wideout converted from quarterback. He was named All-Central Valley Conference first-team wide receiver in ’09 after tallying 141.8 all-purpose yards per game and finishing with 715 yards receiving with seven touchdowns. Burton was also a threat for Fresno CC as a return man, averaging 28.4 yards per return, taking two back for touchdowns.
