Stanford women now 50-0 against Cougars

Jayne Appel scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help No. 2 Stanford pound Washington State 98-67 on Sunday in Pullman, running the Cardinal’s record against the Cougars to 50-0 in a series that dates to 1983.

Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 21 points for Stanford (23-1, 13-0 Pac-10). The Cardinal have won 14 straight since their only loss of the season, at No. 1 Connecticut.

Jazmine Perkins scored a season-high 26 points to lead Washington State (6-18, 1-12), which has lost 13 of its past 14 games. The series between these two programs has rarely featured close games. Washington State fell to 0-24 at home versus the Cardinal.

The Cougars shot well early, but had no answer for Stanford’s dominant inside game. Stanford won the rebound battle 51-29 and outscored the Cougars 61-32 in the paint.

Perkins made 11 of her 14 shots for the Cougars, who shot 53 percent in the second half. Carly Noyes added 13 points.

•Alexis Gray-Lawson scored five of her 35 points in overtime to help California beat Washington 75-68 in Seattle.

Gray-Lawson hit her fifth 3-pointer to give the Golden Bears a 71-68 lead with 1:13 left in overtime, and the Huskies (9-14, 4-9 Pac-10) didn’t score again.

Layshia Clarendon had 14 points for Cal (14-10, 8-5), which moved into sole possession of third place in the conference. The Bears have won eight of 10 after an 0-3 start in the Pac-10.

Kristi Kingma scored 14 points and Regina Rogers had 12 for Washington, which has lost four straight and eight of its past nine.

Swimming

Whitworth’s swimming teams swept the Northwest Conference Championships, which concluded Sunday in Federal Way, Wash.

The Pirates women earned 793 points, 40 points ahead of second-place Puget Sound. The men led the way with 724.5 points, well ahead of the Loggers’ 611 points.

Junior hockey

The Castlegar Rebels scored twice in the third period to edge the Spokane Braves 3-2 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Rebels and Braves will meet again in the first round of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs. The best-of-7 series opens with games in Castlegar, British Columbia, on Friday and Saturday. The series then comes to Spokane for games Feb. 22 and 23 at 8 p.m.
