Trojans damage Huskies
Dwight Lewis scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half, Mike Gerrity added six key points in the closing minutes and Southern California held off a furious rally by Washington in the final 10 minutes for a 67-64 win on Thursday night in Seattle.
The Trojans (16-9, 8-5 Pac-10) handed Washington just its second home loss of the season and more importantly likely ended the Huskies (17-9, 7-7) hopes of repeating as Pac-10 regular-season champs.
Down by 16 with nine minutes left, Washington suddenly awakened, closing within 61-60 on Venoy Overton’s driving basket with 1:25 left.
But Gerrity answered with a layup of his own, then clinched the victory with a fallaway 12-footer with 15 seconds left. Gerrity finished with 12 points, all in the second half.
Quincy Pondexter led Washington with 18 points.
Oregon State 80, California 64: Roeland Schaftenaar tied a season high with 22 points to lead the Beavers past the Golden Bears at Corvallis, Ore.
Seth Tarver added 16 points and seven assists for the Beavers (12-13, 6-7), who took an early 7-5 advantage and led the rest of the game.
Theo Robertson had 15 points and Patrick Christopher 12 for the Golden Bears (17-9, 9-5), whose lead in the conference is down to half a game.
Stanford 72, Oregon 65: Landry Fields scored 21 points, Jeremy Green added 18 and the Cardinal (12-14, 6-8 Pac-10) won on the road for the first time this year, defeating the Ducks (12-13, 4-9) at Eugene, Ore.
Green scored all of his points in the second half, going 3 of 10 from the field but 10 of 10 from the foul line. He had 11 points in a 17-2 run that put the Cardinal up 59-43 with 9:07 remaining.
