In brief: Youth putting on ‘Sleeping Beauty’

COEUR d’ALENE – The cast of Christian Youth Theater-North Idaho will premiere a new version of “Sleeping Beauty” on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Kroc Community Theater, 1765 W. Golf Course Road in Coeur d’Alene.

The show was specially written for CYT and will include a cast of 77 area schoolchildren, 17 students on the crew and more than 70 volunteers.

Other performances are: Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m., March 4 at 7 p.m., and March 5-6 at 3 and 7 p.m.

Tickets purchased in advance are $9 per person and $8 for children. Discounted tickets will be $6 for the matinee on Saturday. Tickets for the 7 p.m. performance on March 4 will be $8 per person. Tickets at the door are $10 each.

Uphill/downhill race at Lookout

COEUR d’ALENE – North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits program will sponsor an uphill and downhill ski race for experienced skiers at the Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

Racers will test their endurance by skiing uphill to the top of the mountain. Their agility will play a role in the downhill race to the bottom. Each racer will complete two laps.

Skiers are encouraged to wear costumes or silly dress as a celebration of the end of the ski season. Awards will be given to the fastest male skier and the fastest female skier as well as the most outlandishly dressed.

Race entry is $10. Registration will take place prior to the start of the race at the lodge.

Chili feed benefits Haden Kistler

CLARK FORK – Clark Fork Junior/Senior High School, 121 Fourth Ave., will host Clark Fork for Haden, on March 6 at 3 p.m.

Members of the Clark Fork community have joined together to raise money for local resident Haden Kistler, who recently had surgery to remove two brain tumors and now is in Seattle, undergoing radiation treatment. Kistler’s mother is self-employed and is also battling cancer.

The dinner will include chili, cornbread, cinnamon rolls along with a silent auction.

All proceeds will benefit Kistler. A special account has been set up at Panhandle State Bank.

Spaghetti dinner for Aubrey Cleave

COEUR d’ALENE – The Alter Church, 901 E. Best Ave., will hold a spaghetti dinner to benefit Aubrey Cleave of Hayden on March 6 from 4:30 to 8 p.m.

Cleave went through a series of medical trauma in January, beginning with a common cold, then waking with paralysis in her legs. Not long after that, she was unable to speak or move and four days later she was in a semi-comatose state.

Cleave has spent a lengthy time in the hospital, diagnosed with viral encephalitis and/or Guillain-Barré syndrome, and her recovery will be costly. The March 6 dinner will help raise funds to help pay her medical bills.

Cost is $10 and free for children 5 and under.

COEUR D’ALENE – The spring schedule for St. Vincent de Paul’s Art on the Edge courses are available online.

Upcoming events include: Great Northwest Paper Airplane Contest, presented by Figpickels and Papillon on March 21. Earth Day will be celebrated at the Harding Family Center on April 17.

Painting and sculpting opportunities also are offered.

Presentation on buffalo soldiers

COEUR D’ALENE – Albert Wilkerson, a re-enactor with a special interest in the Black West, will give a presentation on the history of the buffalo soldiers, or black military troops, in the 19th century on Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, 702 E. Front Ave., at 7 p.m. and at the Hayden Lake Public Library, 8385 N. Government Way, on March 9 at 7 p.m.

“Peacekeepers of the Old West and Their Regional History” will focus on the history of buffalo soldiers. Buffalo soldiers were a part of the Inland Northwest’s history. They were assigned to Fort Wright in Spokane, Montana and they would often stay overnight at Fort Sherman in what is now Coeur d’Alene.

Tribe holding Winter Blessing

WORLEY – The Coeur d’Alene Tribe and the staff at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel will honor tribal culture and the significance of the winter season with the Winter Blessing, to be held at the Stensgar Pavilion Thursday through Saturday.

The ceremonies will focus on storytelling, including a video of the late Lawrence Aripa, well known throughout the Northwest for his Coyote stories. The event will also include drummers, dancers, a display of historical artifacts, and offerings of frybread and huckleberry jam. Each session will be blessed with a smudging of sweetgrass smoke.

Blessing sessions will be on Thursday and Friday from 1 to 2 p.m., and on Saturday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Backcountry films featured March 6

SANDPOINT – The Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival will be on March 6 in the auditorium of the Sandpoint Business and Events Center, 102 S. Euclid St., at 7 p.m. to benefit the Idaho Conservation League.

The festival will feature some of the year’s best backcountry films of human-powered adventure for those who love to ski, snowboard and snowshoe. Participants will vicariously surf the snow with a Japanese calligrapher, test extreme snow conditions in Vermont and ski the brief but majestic winter of Australia.

Tickets are $5 per person and will be available at the door.

Meeting details Safe Kids program

COEUR D’ALENE – Safe Kids Kootenai County will host an informational meeting on March 9 at 8 a.m. in the Kootenai Medical Center Fox Auditorium at the Health Resource Center. The meeting is for individuals and groups interested in helping support Safe Kids, a coalition of organizations aimed at preventing avoidable childhood injuries.

Activities planned throughout the county in the upcoming year include: car seat inspections, bike safety rodeos with helmet fittings, and playground safety assessments.

Personal trainer course offered

North Idaho College will offer another personal trainer certification course beginning Tuesday and will run through April 1. The class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at NIC.

Personal trainer certification is a noncredit course offered through NIC’s Workforce Training Center, located at 525 Clearwater Loop in Post Falls.

The course is divided into three sections, with 15 hours of classroom instruction, 15 hours of practical instruction and a 30-hour internship at a local gym.

Cost for the upcoming class is $549, plus books.

The course is open for enrollment through the NIC Workforce Training Center.
