Arrested A 19-year-old University of Oregon linebacker has been cited for investigation of driving under the influence of intoxicants – the fourth football player at the school to get into legal trouble in less than a month. Police said Kristian Kiko Alonso, who will be a redshirt sophomore this fall, also was cited for driving while uninsured, minor in possession of alcohol, improper turn and failure to maintain a lane. Alonso was released and has a March 4 court date, police spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok said.
Dismissed Oregon coach Chip Kelly announced he had dismissed Jamere Holland from the team, hinting it was because of the wide receiver’s expletive-filled post on the player’s Facebook page. Holland updated his Facebook status after Alonso was arrested. In his post, Holland mistakenly concluded Alonso had been kicked off the team and blasted the move as unfair and damaging to the Ducks. Holland wrote in a later post: “I wish I could block whites as friends and only have blacks LOL, cause apparently I’m misunderstood.”
Announced White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen wasted little time in clearing up one question as Chicago opened spring training for pitchers and catchers. Guillen said Mark Buehrle will start the season opener April 5 against Cleveland. Jake Peavy, the former Padres ace and Cy Young Award winner acquired in a trade last season, will follow Buehrle in the rotation.
Reported American League MVP Joe Mauer has reported to spring training for the Minnesota Twins without a contract extension in place. Mauer is entering the final year of his deal and the Twins are trying to get a long-term extension done before the regular season begins.
Completed A person familiar with the negotiations says Johnny Damon has completed his physical with the Detroit Tigers, clearing the way for the team to finalize a one-year contract with the outfielder.
Out Golden State forwards Corey Maggette and Ronny Turiaf were scratched from the Warriors’ game against the Atlanta Hawks. Maggette traveled to Los Angeles to have his strained left hamstring examined. Turiaf missed the game with an illness.
•After falling ill with a lung infection, Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Dubai Championships. Organizers said that the top-ranked Swiss star picked up the infection last week and will miss the $2 million event for the second straight year.
•All-Star MVP Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat is no longer in a walking boot and remains listed as day-to-day with a strained left calf.
