Shrinking Violets celebrate first year with big bash
Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the ones that stick.
In late December 2008, Spokane resident Mariah McKay suggested on her blog spovangelist that women with common interests start getting together for a monthly brunch and a regular dose of camaraderie.
Barely more than a year later, the group that calls itself the Spokane Shrinking Violets Society has more than 450 Facebook members and 20 to 50 women who regularly attend monthly gatherings at One World Spokane, a local/organic-foods café on East Sprague Avenue. About as many also participate in the Violets’ other events, including craft nights, book clubs, clothing exchanges and writing groups.
Now, the club is set to celebrate its first anniversary with a birthday bash Saturday.
Who are the Shrinking Violets?
The group is “a social outlet, a civic booster club and a support network of similarly interested women friends,” according to McKay’s original vision on her blog.
It’s made up mostly of women (although men are welcome) in their 20s and 30s (although participants of any age are accepted). Many of the group’s gatherings somehow tie to the green or simplicity movement. One well-attended party last summer, for example, involved teaching members how to make lip balm, deodorant and body scrubs from scratch.
There are no membership dues. No commitments. The lineup of activities “naturally comes from someone having an interest and wanting to share it,” said Monique Kovalenko, a Violet who is helping organize Saturday’s party.
The birthday bash will include live music and entertainment from:
DJ Deseure
Amanda Vilbrandt (winner of First Night Spokane’s 48-hour FilmFest)
Poet Brooke Matson
Aerial Pole Performer Chastitie
Stefani Sellars and her Hula Hoop Crew
Singer/Songwriter Kristen Marlo
Singer/Songwriter Kaylee Cole
There will be a vendor fair of local artisans, nonprofits and businesses; an art exhibit by local artists; refreshments and a champagne toast; cupcakes from Santé restaurant; and free child care.
The bash is open to anyone, whether or not you’ve attended a Violets’ event in the past. Tickets were sold through Brown Paper Tickets through Feb. 20, but now are only available at the door for $7. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Silver Auctions, 2020 N. Monroe St.
