Vandersloot sets mark as GU erupts

Courtney Vandersloot became Gonzaga’s all-time assists leader Thursday night as her Gonzaga Bulldogs stormed past Pepperdine 107-64 in West Coast Conference women’s basketball play at Malibu, Calif.

Vandersloot had nine assists to give her 601 for her career, one more than Shannon Mathews (2002-05).

Vandersloot and Heather Bowman (26 points) combined for 46 points on 20-for-29 shooting from the field as the Bulldogs (15-4, 4-0) built a lead as large as 49 points.

The Zags broke the record for points scored by an opponent at Firestone Fieldhouse, edging the 105 by USC on Nov. 21, 1982.

Kayla Standish (14 points), Vivian Frieson (12) and Kelly Bowen (12) also scored in double figures for Gonzaga.

Kelsey Patrick led the Waves (12-6, 3-1) with 10 points, hitting 7 of 8 from the line.

UCLA 59, Washington State 56: Jasmine Dixon scored a career-high 23 points as the Bruins (11-6, 4-2) held off the Cougars (5-13, 0-7) at Pullman.

Christina Nzekwe added eight points and seven rebounds for the Bruins.

The Cougars were led by sophomore guard April Cook, who scored 19 points and hit three 3-pointers down the stretch.

After a 15-point UCLA lead, WSU fought its way back. With 13 seconds left, Jazmine Perkins hit a 3-pointer to cut the Bruins’ lead to 57-56. Perkins finished with 16 points.

Doreena Campbell hit two free throws to put the Bruins up 59-56. Cook had one more look at a 3-pointer but missed short.

UCLA opened the game with an 11-0 run. The Cougars shot 3 of 26 from the floor in the first half.

USC 69, Washington 65: Ashley Corral scored 16 of her 19 points in the second half to help the Trojans (11-6, 5-1 Pac-10) rally for a win over the Huskies (8-9, 3-4) at Seattle.

Sami Whitcomb had 22 points to lead Washington, which lost its third consecutive game.

North Idaho 75, Salt Lake 65: Kama Griffitts scored 19 points, hitting 8 of 8 from the line, as the Cardinals (18-2, 9-2) ended the visiting Bruins’ 17-game winning streak and moved within one-half game of first place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

NIC, which has won 10 straight, trailed 30-26 at halftime but shot 19 of 20 from the line after intermission.

The Cardinals outscored the Bruins (17-2, 9-1) 18-3 from 3-point range, led by Griffitts’ 3-for-4 effort.

Amy Warbrick scored 15 points for the Cards, and Camille Reynolds and Tugce Canitez added 11 apiece.

Salt Lake guard Haley Holmstead scored 28 points, hitting 11 of 19 from the field.
