Prep roundup: Egland has four-win night

The Lewis and Clark girls won the meet, but Lakeside’s Ananeae Egland stole the show with wins on the beam (9.15), floor (9.175), vault (8.8) and all-around (35.925) in the Greater Spokane League gymnastics teams’ regular-season finale at North Central on Thursday.

Lily Hoch led the Tigers with a first-place finish on the bars (8.95), third on the beam (8.8) and third overall (34). Lewis and Clark finished with 138.9 and was followed by North Central with 134.1 and Lakeside with 131.925.

It was the best finish of the year for North Central, led by Christy Grorud’s second-place finish on floor (8.6), beam (8.9), vault (8.8) and all-around (35).

Boys basketball: IML

St. Maries 59, Timberlake 56 (OT): Jack Mercer’s two free throws in overtime sealed the Intermountain League win for the visiting Lumberjacks (6-5, 3-2).

Timberlake’s Cooper Simpson sent the game into overtime on his tip-in with one second left, keeping alive the Tigers’ hope for their first league win. Simpson finished with 16 points and Derek Tymesen led the Tigers (7-9, 0-4) with 18.

Zach Lehman of St. Maries led all scorers with 24.

Nonleague

Post Falls 65, Moscow 57: The Trojans committed 13 first-half turnovers as the visiting Bears took a 13-point halftime lead, but pressure defense and improved ball control led to a second-half comeback for Post Falls (13-2, 2-1).

The Trojans trailed 32-21 at half, but outscored the Bears 24-10 in the third quarter.

Shawn Reid led the way with a double-double, scoring 17 and grabbing 11 rebounds. Marcus Colbert scored 15 and Connor Hill chipped in with 14. Moscow’s Mac Stannard led all scorers with 19 and Jake Helbling added 16 for the Bears (11-3, 1-0).

Potlatch 68, Tekoa-Oakesdale 66: CJ Keasal scored 19 to lead the Loggers past the visiting Nighthawks (2-13, 0-3). Drake Hinkins led Tekoa-Oakesdale with 25.

Girls nonleague

Post Falls 56, Moscow 39: Senior Katelyn Loper scored 26 points and a big third quarter helped the Trojans (13-6, 3-2) pull away after a tight first half.

It was senior night for the host Post Falls girls, who started slow and led just 17-14 at halftime. The Trojans outscored Moscow (4-15, 2-2) 26-10 in the third quarter.

Tekoa-Oakesdale 45, Potlatch 20: The Nighthawks kept the Loggers scoreless in the second and third quarters on their way to the victory. Desiree Chappell scored 19 points and had 15 rebounds for T-O (8-8).

Coaches vs. Cancer

Basketball coaches from the Greater Spokane League schools will wear sneakers with their suits tonight and Saturday to support the American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer program.

“Suits and Sneakers” aims to raise awareness in the fight against cancer and provides an opportunity for fans to donate to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society during this weekend’s GSL basketball games.
