Cuban eyes Rangers
DALLAS — Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Friday that he is investigating the possibility of buying the Texas Rangers, or perhaps joining another group in the bidding process.
Cuban’s interest has been sparked, apparently, after several recent rulings in the case lowered the debt that might be included from the sale by Rangers owner Tom Hicks.
The Rangers have been for sale for months as Hicks has been embroiled with creditors.
Rangers president Nolan Ryan and Pittsburgh businessman Chuck Greenberg have submitted a bid to buy the team.
Cuban, who said he was intent on retaining Ryan in any ownership scenario, wanted to reiterate that he had no plans to undercut anyone, least of all Greenberg, with whom he has had a long relationship since they both are from the Pittsburgh area.
