Golf: Tim Clark shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 64 for a share of the second-round lead with Dean Wilson in the Canadian Open in another low-scoring day at straight-hitter friendly St. George’s in Toronto.

Wilson had his second straight 65 to match Clark, The Players Championship winner in May, at 10-under 130 on the hilly, tree-lined course.

Wilson closed with a 20-foot par putt on the par-4 18th after missing the fairway.

Brent Delahoussaye and Steve Wheatcroft were a stroke back. Delahoussaye had a 69 a day after matching the Canadian Open record with a 62.

Wheatcroft shot a 66. J.J. Henry (65), Rob Grube (66), Hunter Mahan (67) and University of Washington graduate Brock Mackenzie (68) were at 8 under. Tim Herron (63) and defending champion Nathan Green (65) topped the group at 7 under.

Ferris graduate Alex Prugh – one of two former Huskies who missed the cut – shot a second-round 72.

Pavin, Langer share Senior British lead: American Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin shot a second straight 2-under 69 to share the second-round lead with Bernhard Langer of Germany at the Senior British Open in Carnoustie, Scotland.

Pavin and Langer (71) have 4-under totals of 138 and are one shot ahead of a quartet that includes Ian Woosnam (67) and Jay Haas (69).

Japan’s Miyazato leads Evian Masters: Mika Miyazato of Japan shot a 5-under 67 for the second-round lead at the LPGA’s Evian Masters at Evian-les-Bains, France.

Michelle Wie started the day tied for sixth at 4 under, but she slipped down the leaderboard to 1 over after a sluggish round (77) that included a quintuple bogey on the 10th hole.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for 25th.

Steelers sign coach Tomlin through 2012

NFL: The Pittsburgh Steelers signed head coach Mike Tomlin to a two-year contract extension through the 2012 season, with an option year in 2013.

The extension was expected because the Steelers’ policy has been to sign a coach before he begins the final season of a contract. Tomlin is only the Steelers’ third coach since 1969, following Chuck Noll (1969-91) and Bill Cowher (1992-2006).

Dolphins sign Douglas: The Miami Dolphins moved quickly to find a replacement for injured defensive end Phillip Merling.

Free agent Marques Douglas agreed to terms on a $2.5 million, two-year contract.

Douglas shores up a position depleted when Merling recently suffered an Achilles tendon injury that will force him to miss the entire season.

Finch shuts out Japan at softball World Cup

Softball: Jennie Finch took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning in one of her final starts for the U.S. national team, Kaitlin Cochran homered in her second straight game and the Americans beat top rival Japan 5-0 at the World Cup of Softball at Oklahoma City.

Finch, who announced earlier this week that she’ll retire from international softball after the World Cup, lost her no-hitter with two outs in the fifth when Maki Tanigawa lined a single off the glove of third baseman Andrea Duran. Shortstop Natasha Watley picked up the deflected ball, but her throw to first was off target.

France coach drops World Cup players

Soccer: France coach Laurent Blanc will drop all 23 World Cup players for his first match next month as collective punishment for the team’s embarrassing fiasco in South Africa.

The French federation said in a statement it had granted Blanc permission to suspend the players at the coach’s request.

France was eliminated in the group stage at the World Cup, failing to win a game. The players also refused to train as a protest after Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home following an expletive-laced tirade at then-coach Raymond Domenech.

Menezes could coach Brazil: Mano Menezes has been invited to coach the Brazilian soccer team. Brazil was turned down earlier in the day by Muricy Ramalho, who honored his contract with club team Fluminense.
