Sidelined Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo tore his Achilles tendon and is out indefinitely. The team said that Salo was hurt “while training” and would not comment further. Signed The Dallas Stars agreed to terms with forward Fabian Brunnstrom on a one-year contract worth $675,000. The deal was reached before a scheduled arbitration hearing Friday in Toronto.

• The Cleveland Cavaliers added their first player since LeBron James left as a free agent, signing swingman Christian Eyenga. The Cavs selected Eyenga in the first round in the 2009 draft (30th overall), but the 21-year-old played in Spain last season.

• The San Antonio Spurs signed former Oklahoma State guard and first-round draft pick James Anderson.

Fined The NBA fined Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations David Kahn $50,000 for his radio remarks about past marijuana use by power forward Michael Beasley.

Pleaded Prosecutors say Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans pleaded no contest to reckless driving. Evans had his driver’s license suspended for 30 days and was ordered to serve three years of informal probation after entering his no contest plea.

Traded The last-place Tulsa Shock traded veteran center Kara Braxton to defending WNBA champion Phoenix.

Died Former North Carolina State defensive tackle Dennis Byrd, who was to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December, died in Charlotte, N.C. He was 63.

Vic Ziegel, a longtime New York sports writer and editor with an eye for boxing and horse racing, has died. He was 72. He had been battling lung cancer since November and died at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, said the Daily News, the newspaper where he worked for 25 years.

Awarded NASCAR’s Denny Hamlin was honored as the second-quarter winner in Driver of the Year voting. Hamlin won three Sprint Cup Series races and one Nationwide Series race in the period that ended June 20.

Extended NASCAR driver David Reutimann signed a contract extension with Michael Waltrip Racing that will keep him in the No. 00 Toyota through the 2012 Cup season.
