Williams golf’s top freshman

University of Washington freshman Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, on Friday won the Phil Mickelson Award as the nation’s top freshman golfer.

Williams tied for medalist honors twice this season – the Battle at the Beach and the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. He also was runner-up at both the NCAA West Regional and the Washington National Individual Championship.

His UW team fell to Oregon 3-2 in the quarterfinals of match play at the NCAA Championships on Friday at the Honors Course outside Chattanooga, Tenn. Williams won his match 2 and 1. Two other matches were decided by the same score and two ended 1 up.

Soccer

The Spokane Spiders (1-5) notched their first Premier Development League victory of the season with a 3-1 win at Albi Stadium over the Washington Crossfire (1-4).

Tied 1-1 in the second half, Jake Moug scored at 53 minutes off an assist from Dustin Allberry. Spokane’s first goal came at 29 minutes on Michael Noonan’s tap-in off a pass from Nick Love.

Jeff Renslo took over for injured goalkeeper Garrett Brickey in the second half and had a full-stretch save to keep Spokane in front 2-1.

Rowing

All five University of Washington boats advanced to the Grand Finals of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. Four of the five crews won their races.

Helen Missildine dies

Helen Missildine, 82, the wife of the longtime Spokesman-Review sports columnist Harry Missildine, died May 18 of colon cancer.

The Missildines married in 1979 and moved two years later to Moscow, where he worked as a columnist for the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. He died Dec. 23, 2005.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. June 16 at the 1912 Center in Moscow.
