She can really get behind it
Melanie Brown, better known as Mel B, can relate to what “Dance Your Ass Off” contestants must go through.
The former Spice Girl, dubbed Scary Spice because of her wild animal print outfits, gained 75 pounds during her second pregnancy and had to work to get back in shape.
“It wasn’t all baby,” says Brown, the new host of the competition series, which returns for its second season tonight at 11 on the Oxygen cable channel.
“I knew to be at my optimum, I needed to get healthy and fit for my mind and my body and my soul,” she says.
Contestants are judged on their dancing ability and pounds lost. The prize is $100,000.
Brown lost her weight in three months, just in time to be on “Dancing With the Stars,” where she finished second behind race car driver Helio Castroneves.
Soon after that she was asked to replace first-season “DYAO” host Marissa Jaret Winokur. She agreed immediately.
“It’s an incredible show. And this show has so much heart,” says Brown, who likes how the series demonstrates that nutrition and workouts can be used to get fit.
“I watched it last season, me and my whole entire family, and I got completely addicted to it. So when I got offered this job, I literally jumped at the chance.”
Being around the contestants inspired Brown to continue her own workout regiment.
She was put to shame one day, after a three-mile run, to find out a contestant had run 15 miles.
