EUGENE, Ore. – University of Washington freshman Joe Zimmerman placed fourth in the men’s javelin during Thursday’s second day of the NCAA outdoor track and field championships at Hayward Field.

Zimmerman (Lewis and Clark High) threw 233 feet, 7 inches on his second throw in the finals. Kyle Nielsen (241-6) placed third, giving UW 11 points in the event.

Brown’s Craig Kinsley won with a throw of 250-3.

Elsewhere, Idaho sophomore Gabby Midles placed 13th in the women’s hammer, reaching 185-1.

Champion Nikola Lomnicka, a sophomore from Georgia, threw 215-1 to top the field by nearly 5 feet.

Idaho sophomore Jeremy Klas (Moscow High) tied for 16th in the men’s pole vault at 16-4 3/4. The event was marred by controversy when officials discovered they forgot to raise the bar to 16-10 3/4 after the opening height. Multiple schools filed a protest that was denied.

Kansas senior Jordan Scott took first at 17-8 1/2.

Oregon’s Brianne Theisen defended her title in the heptathlon with a career-high 6,094 points.

In men’s decathlon, Oregon’s Ashton Eaton had 4,500 points after the first five events, an American collegiate record.

Liberty’s Sam Chelanga won the men’s 10,000 in 28:37.40.

Clemson’s Patricia Mamona won the women’s triple jump at 45-113/4.
