Wading into a new contest

If memory serves, The Slice first asked readers for snapshots of little kids in backyard wading pools in 1992 or 1993.

That request has been repeated more than a few times in the years since. On a couple of occasions, it was for Slice contests. Other times, it wasn’t. And sometimes it was not even really about children.

In 1996, readers were advised that they would enhance their chances of seeing their photo in print if they included dogs in their kiddie pool pictures. In 2007, readers were asked for pictures that featured dogs – and only dogs – in the pools. And so on.

Which bring us to the summer of 2010.

Today I am pleased to announce The Slice’s Wonderful World of Water Wading Pool Photo Contest. This version is new and improved in one key way: This time around, I pledge to use virtually every photo sent to me.

Some will appear in print and others will be on the S-R’s website. But I intend to publish them all.

OK, I need to qualify that. Of course. If the photo is hideously out of focus, prominently features a political campaign sign or violates community decency standards, I will veto it. In addition, I will disqualify entries that violate the rules.

Otherwise, you’re good to go.

The photo – one per entry, please – should show children, or kids and pets, in a wading pool. That’s it. Any themes or artistry are up to you.

Here are the rules.

1. All entries must be submitted via e-mail. I’m sorry. I know that leaves some people out. But I have decided to get out of the mailing-pictures-back business.

2. The photo must be taken this summer. We’ll go with the honor system on this.

3. Identify everyone in the photo by full names. Please be certain about the spelling.

4. The pictures must arrive at Slice Headquarters – pault@spokesman.com – no later than one month from today, July 15.

There will be modest prizes, and one photographer will be crowned king or queen of Wading World.

Be sure to note your daytime phone number and mailing address.

Thanks, and good luck.
