Man pleads not guilty to attempted murder

A man charged with shooting another man several times June 3 pleaded not guilty Tuesday and was given a trial date of Aug. 16. Andrew T. Burns, 36, appeared Tuesday before Superior Court Judge Ellen Kalama Clark. She kept the bond amount at $60,000. Burns has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting of 40-year-old Kenneth Grooms near East Mallon Avenue and North Madelia Street. Police originally did not believe Grooms would survive, but he has since improved. Burns denied shooting Grooms, according to court records, but acknowledged that he was in the area at the time.
