G-Prep names recipients of Ignatian Service Award
Gonzaga Prep honored students as being “a person for others” with the Ignatian Service Award.

Grad wins aviation scholarship
Anthony Redder, a recent graduate of Liberty High School, was awarded the Chris Hanly Memorial Aviation Scholarship.
The scholarship is presented to students who express a strong interest in aviation. The $1,500 award will help Redder pay for pilot training.
Hanly graduated from Cheney High School in 1997 and received his private pilot’s license at age 17. Hanly died of heart failure three days after turning 24.

LC’s wins 5th Avenue award
Lewis and Clark and North Central high schools were recently recognized for their dramatic talent at the 5th Avenue Theatre’s High School Musical Awards, held June 7 in Seattle.
LC was honored for best scenic design for its musical “Guys and Dolls,” and NC’s Dalin Tipton was named best actor for his role as Huck Finn in NC’s production of “Big River.”
Also walking away with a number of awards was the University High School drama department. The U-Hi drama students were honored for the musical “Sweeney Todd.” U-Hi’s Ross Mumford won best supporting actor for his role as Anthony in the performance, teacher Russell Seaton was awarded best musical director, and the U-Hi drama students also won the award for best chorus. The drama department was nominated for a contest-best seven awards and also received an honorable mention.
Cataldo students place at state
Cataldo Catholic School’s fifth grade math team took third place in the Math is Cool state competition on May 22 and team member Ella McKeirnan finished eighth in the individual competition.
The team took third in the regional competition in March.
The team’s members include Will Gottsch, Erin O’Rourk and Ben Schemmel.
Indians, Banner Bank honor graduates
The Spokane Indians and Banner Bank awarded area high school graduates college scholarships totaling $3,000.
Scholarship recipients are judged on leadership, character and community involvement.
Scholarship recipients include Annika Swanson and Ashley Connors of West Valley; James Wasem of Rogers; Kelly Ann Hennessey of Liberty; Rebecca Southwick of Northwest Christian; and Stephanie Ruygrok of Deer Park. All students will receive a $500 award.
Winners will be awarded their scholarships at an Indians game Saturday during a pregame ceremony.
Inland Power names recipients
Area students were given $1,000 scholarships by Inland Power and Light as part of its Excellence Award program. Scholarship recipients include Kelly Alderman of Medical Lake; Evan Anders of Gonzaga Prep; Chelsie Breen of Cheney; Mary Konis of Mt. Spokane; and Bryce Peters of Mead.
Student awards are based on an essay, community service, school and work activities, grades and letters of recommendation.
