In brief: Sheriff urges safety on river
SPOKANE RIVER – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office marine patrol is reminding local water recreationists that the Spokane River is still running high, and cold water temperatures can pose a risk to anyone who is on the water without the proper equipment or skills.
Hypothermia becomes a risk in any water less than 70 degrees and can cause an otherwise capable boater or swimmer to become weak and disoriented, said Sgt. Dave Reagan in a press release.
Life jackets must be worn at all times when on the river from the Idaho State line to the Plantes Ferry Centennial Trail bridge. Boaters should also carry a sound-producing device – a horn or whistle for when needed.
Motorized vessels are not allowed on the river April 16 through Oct. 14 from the Plantes Ferry Centennial Trail bridge to the Barker Road vridge, and from the west Spokane city limits to Plese Flats.
