MLB notebook: Bedard starts rehab
Erik Bedard is in Arizona to face hitters again, a final step before making his season debut for the Seattle Mariners next month.
Bedard threw 2
The 31-year-old Bedard hasn’t pitched since shoulder surgery in August.
Baltimore’s former ace is also scheduled to pitch Saturday for the Peoria team in the Arizona Rookie League.
Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu says Bedard will probably need at least one more start in the higher minors before making his Mariners season debut. That would likely be with Triple-A Tacoma late this month.
Blue Jays release Encarnacion
The Toronto Blue Jays have cut third baseman Edwin Encarnacion, less than a year after getting him from Cincinnati.
The Blue Jays designated Encarnacion for assignment on Monday, giving them 10 days to make a move with him. He hit .200 with nine home runs and 22 RBIs this season. Toronto got Encarnacion last July in a trade that sent Scott Rolen to the Reds.
Yanks call up Curtis, designate Moeller
The New York Yankees have called up outfielder Colin Curtis from Triple-A Scranton and designated catcher Chad Moeller for assignment.
Curtis hit .280 in 35 games with Scranton. Manager Joe Girardi, speaking before the Yankees opened a three-game interleague series at Arizona, said Curtis can play all three outfield positions and gives the team another left-handed bat off the bench.
Indians option LHP to Columbus
The Cleveland Indians have optioned left-hander David Huff to Triple-A Columbus. Huff dropped to 2-9 on Saturday in a loss at Pittsburgh and has won only once in his last 11 starts. In his last outing, Huff allowed five runs and six hits in five innings with six walks.
Gillespie recalled to Arizona
The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled outfielder Cole Gillespie from Triple-A Reno. Gillespie was recalled on April 21 and hit .256 with one home run, five doubles and four RBIs in 17 games.
