Penalized The NCAA has ruled Mississippi State forward Renardo Sidney will have to repay $11,800 in improper benefits and sit out the remainder of this basketball season and nine games next season if he wants to play for the Bulldogs. Sidney received preferential treatment and improper benefits because of his talent, according to an NCAA statement Friday. The freshman has only been allowed to practice during the investigation. Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said the school will appeal.
Sidelined Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry is expected to be out 10-14 days following surgery to repair facial injuries. Terry was injured during Wednesday night’s game against Minnesota when he collided with Corey Brewer of the Timberwolves.
Out Mets shortstop Jose Reyes plans to undergo tests in New York on Monday after doctors in Florida discovered a thyroid imbalance. Reyes is not expected to take part in any physical activity while he is gone.
Arrested Former heavyweight boxing champion Tommy Morrison has been arrested in Wichita, Kan., on suspicion of marijuana possession. A police report says the 41-year-old boxer was taken into custody Thursday evening at a fitness club after police received a report of a suspicious person.
Denied The NCAA has denied Oregon State’s appeal for an additional year of eligibility for quarterback Lyle Moevao. Moevao injured his right shoulder in the 2008 season and required surgery before playing just one down early last season. He injured his right foot in practice in October and didn’t play again.
Appointed A federal mediator will be at the bargaining table when Major League Soccer’s labor talks resume next week. Management and the MLS Players Union said they have accepted an offer from George H. Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, to serve as mediator.
Suspended Montreal Canadiens center Maxim Lapierre was suspended four games for a hit Thursday that knocked San Jose Sharks center Scott Nichol into the end boards.
