In brief: Ducks QB Masoli faces burglary count
College football: Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who helped lead the Ducks to the Pac-10 Conference title and a Rose Bowl berth last season, faces a burglary charge in connection with a theft at a campus fraternity house in late January.
The Lane County district attorney’s office says Masoli and former Oregon receiver Garrett Embry were each charged Wednesday with one count of burglary in the second degree.
A fraternity member reported that Masoli and Embry stole two computers and a guitar from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house on Jan. 25.
The Ducks announced in February that Embry had been dismissed from the team a month before for violating team rules unrelated to the alleged theft.
Grizzlies get rare victory over Celtics
NBA: Rudy Gay scored 28 points to lead Memphis to a 111-91 victory over the Boston Celtics and give the Grizzlies a franchise-record seventh straight road win. It was the Grizzlies’ first win over Boston in seven tries since 2006.
•Durant sparks Thunder: Kevin Durant scored 29 points, Russell Westbrook added 17 points and came up just shy of a triple-double, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the visiting New Orleans Hornets 98-84.
•Mavericks win 13th straight: Jason Kidd had 20 points and nine assists, Caron Butler added 16 points, and the Dallas Mavericks recovered from a lethargic start to match the NBA’s longest winning streak this season with their 13th straight victory, 96-87 over the visiting New Jersey Nets.
Sabres take over division lead
NHL: Rookie defenseman Tyler Myers had a goal and three assists and the Buffalo Sabres reclaimed the top spot in the Northeast Division with a 5-3 victory over the Dallas Stars at Buffalo, N.Y.
•Capitals win in OT: Tomas Fleischmann scored on a one-timer from the right circle with 1:40 remaining in overtime to give the Washington Capitals a 4-3 victory over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.
•GMs propose rule change: NHL general managers will recommend a rule change on blindside hits to the head, looking to protect players and punish those responsible.
The GMs will recommend to the competition committee that referees call a minor or major penalty for any hit where the primary point of contact is the head. Such a violation would be reviewed for possible discipline.
Vikings’ Williams testifies in trial
NFL: Minnesota Vikings lineman Pat Williams echoed teammate Kevin Williams in telling a judge he didn’t know an over-the-counter weight-loss supplement contained a substance banned by the NFL.
Pat Williams, a 13-year veteran, testified he first took StarCaps when he was with the Buffalo Bills, where a trainer told him it was a legal supplement.
The NFL is trying to suspend the Williamses for four games each for testing positive in 2008 for the banned substance bumetanide.
Both the Williamses are suing the NFL, alleging it violated state labor laws in applying its anti-doping policy.
•Off-duty officers back Roethlisberger: An attorney says two off-duty Pennsylvania law enforcement officers were with Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger celebrating his birthday at the Georgia nightclub where a woman accused him of sexual assault, but they didn’t see anything inappropriate.
•Texans lure Smith: Offensive lineman Wade Smith, an unrestricted free agent, has agreed to four-year deal with the Houston Texans.
•Jackson joins Eagles: Marlin Jackson’s surgically repaired knees didn’t scare off the Philadelphia Eagles, who signed the free-agent defensive back to a two-year deal.
•Lions sign Wade: The Detroit Lions have signed free-agent cornerback Jonathan Wade to a one-year contract.
•Redskins grab Kemoeatu: Free-agent nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu signed a two-year, $6.975 million contract with the Washington Redskins.
•Chiefs get defensive tackle: The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free-agent defensive tackle Shaun Smith. No terms were disclosed.
Riesch tops Vonn in final downhill
Miscellany: American Lindsey Vonn finished second to Germany’s Maria Riesch in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in the final women’s downhill of the season. Vonn failed to clinch the World Cup overall title but maintains a huge lead with three races left.
•Davis found dead in home: Willie Davis, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ speedy center fielder for 13 seasons, has died in Burbank, Calif. He was 69.
Burbank police Sgt. Robert Quesada says Davis was found dead Tuesday morning in his home. No cause of death was immediately released.
•Baker leads Iditarod: Veteran musher John Baker grabbed the Iditarod lead as the first musher to leave the ghost town of Ophir, more than 660 miles from the finish line. Canada’s Hans Gatt was the first to reach Ophir and was followed by Cim Smyth, but Baker beat them all out.
