Gonzaga gets past Bradley

Gonzaga scored three runs in the first inning en route to a 6-4 victory Sunday over Bradley in the Bulldogs’ final game of the Irish Baseball Classic in San Antonio.

The Zags (7-7) finished the tournament 2-2, with both wins coming against the Braves.

Gonzaga had six stolen bases on the day and Drew Heid and Ernesto Ortiz each contributed two hits. Andy Hunter scored three times for the Bulldogs.

Starter Jacob Brown allowed two runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. Andrew Danner (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Billy Moon earned his second save of the season, going two innings without allowing a run.

Bradley committed four errors, leading to two unearned runs for Gonzaga.

•Brodie Greene hit two two-run home runs as No. 29 Texas A&M beat No. 25 Washington State 6-5 in College Station, Texas, to win the three-game series.

Michael Weber was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Cougars (10-3), including a solo home run. Matt Fanelli extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Kyle Johnson, who was injured in WSU’s win Saturday, was released from the hospital late Saturday and was with the team Sunday.

Washington State begins a two-game series against Dallas Baptist on Tuesday in Dallas.

•Puget Sound and Whitworth split a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Tacoma, which gave the Loggers a series win.

The Pirates (4-12, 1-2 NWC) collected 20 hits in the opener and won 10-4. Landon Scott went 2 for 5 with three RBIs for Whitworth, and Kyle Krustangel was 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Nathan Johnson (2-2) went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits over nine innings.

Puget Sound turned the tables in the nightcap, collecting 17 hits in a 13-3 win.

•Community Colleges of Spokane swept a doubleheader with Okanagan College, winning 9-1 and 12-3 at Spokane Falls.

Jake Graham had three hits, including a double, in Game 1, and Mike Bartlett and Beau Dahmen each had two hits. Martin Aquirre (2-0) earned the win.

In Game 2, Taylor King and Quinn Holt each had three hits, including a double, while Seth Peterson and Taylor Hustad each had two hits. Chris Allen (1-0) was the winner.

Softball

Jessica Mangis’ pitching and Ashley Carey’s bat helped Whitworth upset Linfield 2-1 in the opener of a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Spokane. The Wildcats won the nightcap 10-8.

Mangis pitched a complete-game four- hitter and Carey hit a two-run double to help the Pirates (1-5, 1-5 NWC) beat 15th-ranked Linfield in Game 1.

In Game 2, Whitworth took an 8-7 lead after two innings, but Brittany Woods came on in relief for the Wildcats and shut down the Pirates the rest of the way. Linfield scored once in the third and twice in the seventh to rally for the victory.

The teams finish the series with a doubleheader today starting at 11 a.m.
