Faith seminar focuses on local sustainability

The Faith and Environment Network will present its third annual Called to Care Conference on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1832 W. Dean Ave.

The conference will focus on local organizing for environmental stewardship and sustainability. Presenters include Wim Mauldin and Jessica Anundson of the Spokane Alliance and Sustainable Works, Leanne Beres and Jessie Dye of Earth Ministry in Seattle, Juliet Sinisterra, a local sustainability planner and Jon Snyder, Spokane city councilman.

More speakers

•One Peace, Many Paths and the Universal Compassion Movement will host Compassion in Action on Sunday from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

The Venerable Geshe Thupten Phelgye, a Buddhist monk, will speak at the event.

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., will present speaker Lura Pierce, former teacher at St. George’s Middle School, during its worship service Sunday at 10 a.m.

Pierce will speak on the topic of peace.

Plymouth Congregational Church, 1502 W. Eighth Ave., will present a demonstration, “Messiah in the Passover,” Sunday at 10 a.m.

The demonstration will be conducted by Mark Ellick of Chosen People Ministries and will include insights into Jewish traditions.

•The Monastery of St. Gertrude and the Benedictine Oblates of Spokane will present “Finding God in the Busyness of Life: A Benedictine Spirituality Retreat” Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone Ave.

The presenter will be Sister Teresa Jackson of the Monastery of St. Gertrude in Cottonwood, Idaho.

Celtic service

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present a St. Patrick celebration today at 7 p.m. to celebrate the life of Patrick within the context of the Celtic Communion service.

The service will include sung chants and Celtic music. A party will follow the service.

Lenten supper

Central Baptist Church, 19 W. Shannon Ave., will offer its last Lenten soup and bread supper of the season Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m.

There will be a short inspirational message during the dinner and following the event will be a Bible study on Revelation.

Volunteer opportunities

Catholic Charities of Spokane, 12 E. Fifth Ave., will host a volunteer information session Tuesday from 10 to 11:15 a.m.

Snacks and tours of the facility will be provided.

The session will include information on the organization’s many programs including Bernadette Place, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Relief Services, Childbirth and Parenting Alone Program, the Christmas Bureau, counseling, House of Charity, Parish Social Ministry, Refugee and Immigration Services, the regional offices, Respect Life, St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, St. Margaret’s Shelter, Senior and Family Housing and senior services.

Book sale

First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., and Manito Presbyterian Church will present a two-day Colossal Book Sale Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

Items for sale will include best-sellers, fiction, paperbacks, children’s books, inspirational books, cookbooks, Biblical books, reference, and some rare books.

The proceeds of the sale will benefit the church’s adult and children’s libraries and local and foreign missions.

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Nevada St., will show the movie “The Absent-Minded Professor,” starring Fred MacMurray on Friday at 7 p.m.
