Gonzaga’s rally comes up short
Gonzaga fell behind early and couldn’t come back in an 8-5 nonconference baseball loss to No. 15 UC Irvine on Sunday in Irvine, Calif.
The Bulldogs (8-11) recorded 15 hits. Royce Bolinger finished 4 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI, Mark Castellitto added two hits and drove in two runs and Chris Sturdivant had two hits and scored twice.
Gonzaga took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Anteaters scored seven runs in their third, chasing Bulldogs starter Reedy Berg (1-2). Berg allowed six runs over two-plus innings.
•Nick Combo’s two-run single gave Whitworth the lead in the sixth inning to cap a comeback from an 8-4 deficit for a 10-8 win over Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference game in Spokane.
Jake Hanley (1-1) pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief of Pirates (6-13, 3-3) starter Nathan Johnson, who allowed eight runs on nine hits.
Pirates J.R. Jarrell and Dan Belet had two RBIs apiece.
•Community Colleges of Spokane (10-2) swept a doubleheader with Grays Harbor at Spokane Falls CC, winning 4-3 and 14-2.
Jordan Hibbard (1-0) earned the first-game win, while Jordan Wilson (1-0) won the second game.
•Washington State’s game at Wichita State was canceled by snow. The game, plus Saturday’s snowed-out game, won’t be rescheduled.
Softball
Whitworth opened its four-day run at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational by winning one of three games.
The Pirates (2-9) lost to Whittier 13-1 in five innings and to North Central (Ill.) 4-1 before closing the day with a 10-5 win over British Columbia.
•Community Colleges of Spokane (1-10) lost twice at the Walla Walla preseason tournament in Richland. Chemeketa defeated CCS 5-0 before the Sasquatch dropped a 6-5 decision to Shoreline. Stephanie Chrystal homered twice and had four RBIs against Shoreline.
Men’s basketball
Whitworth senior post Nate Montgomery picked up his second All-American honor when D3hoops.com named him a fourth-team honoree during Division III final four festivities in Salem, Va.
Montgomery also scored seven points for the West team during Saturday’s inaugural NABC Division III all-star game in Salem.
