Returning Center Zydrunas Ilgauskas re-signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the first day he was eligible to return to Cleveland following a trade to Washington in the three-team deal that brought Antawn Jamison and Sebastian Telfair to Cleveland. Ilgauskas has averaged 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds this season.

Leaving Virginia’s suspended leading scorer Sylven Landesberg is leaving school to pursue a professional career. Coach Tony Bennett said Landesberg won’t complete the current semester after being suspended earlier this month for the rest of the season for failing to meet academic obligations. Bennett announced Monday freshman swingman Tristan Spurlock wouldn’t return by mutual agreement.

Signed The Arizona Cardinals signed restricted free agent tight end Ben Patrick to his one-year qualifying offer. The team also re-signed former Washington State player Hamza Abdullah to a one-year contract and fullback Nehemiah Broughton to his exclusive rights contract.

•The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed veteran offensive lineman Barry Sims to a one-year contract. Coach Mike Singletary wanted to bring some continuity to a unit that was plagued by injury last season — and Sims filled in as the starter at left tackle for seven games last season.

Resigned Houston women’s basketball coach Joe Curl has resigned because of heart problems. Curl’s resignation comes a day after men’s basketball coach Tom Penders resigned. Curl, who has been with the team for 12 seasons, missed five games in late February and Houston’s loss to Texas Tech in the opening round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament because of health issues.

Recommended Prosecutors say NBA star Gilbert Arenas should go to jail for three months for bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room. His lawyer says the appropriate punishment is probation and community service. Both sides filed sentencing memoranda, three days before the Wizards point guard is to be sentenced for a felony gun charge.
