Mead, CV tie for title

Ben Doggett took a cross from Jordan Etten in the 74th minute to snap a 1-1 tie and Derek Butz tacked on another goal 2 minutes later as Mead (11-2, 9-1) earned a share of the Greater Spokane League boys soccer title with a 3-1 win over Shadle Park (3-11, 2-8) at Albi Stadium on Friday.

The Panthers closed the regular season in a tie for first with Central Valley, with each team scoring 27 points in the final standings.

Lucas Schneidmiller tallied a pair of goals as CV (11-1, 9-1) shut out host Rogers (2-11, 0-10) 5-0 to earn the share of the title.

In other GSL matches, Tyler Rice punched home the first goal of the game and later added an assist as East Valley (8-7, 6-4) closed the season with a 2-0 victory over North Central (7-6-1, 4-6) at EV. … Connor Dickson scored a goal and added an assist in the second half and Gonzaga Prep (8-4-1, 6-4) slammed the door on Mt. Spokane (1-11, 1-8) 3-0 at GP. … Alec Cutter broke a scoreless tie in the 35th minute then added a second-half assist as visiting Ferris (9-5-1, 8-2) beat University (8-5, 6-4) 2-0. U-Hi outshot the Saxons 13-10, but Nick Stebbins notched five saves in the shutout.

Baseball

Nate Blackham went 5 for 5 with two runs and an RBI and Carson Blumenthal hit a solo home run and earned the win as Mt. Spokane (16-1) held off Lewis and Clark (10-6) 7-3 at Hart Field in a Greater Spokane League game.

In other GSL games, Ryan Leone had two hits and four RBIs, driving in three runs during a nine-run first inning that powered Central Valley past North Central (2-14) 12-1 in five innings at CV. The Bears (13-3) came one step closer to clinching the top spot among the GSL’s 4A teams, still holding a 11/2-game lead over Mead. … Paul Miller, Jake Schrader and Kramer Kembel all had three hits and Kembel had a home run and three RBIs as Mead (12-4) thumped East Valley (3-14) 12-2 at Mead. … Jon Rapose struck out 10 and allowed no runs on three hits to earn the victory for University (10-6) over Shadle Park (6-12) 6-0 at Avista Stadium. Justin Liu had a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Titans. … David Machtolf went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs and Gonzaga Prep (5-11) scored eight runs in the fifth inning to close out Rogers (2-14) 11-1 at GP. Ryan Senger took the win for the Bullpups, allowing one run on five hits.

•Drew Turbin had two hits and two RBIs and Matt Lambert doubled and added an RBI as Coeur d’Alene (17-7, 6-3) salvaged a split against Inland Empire 5A foe Lewiston (19-2, 10-2), winning 3-2 in the second game after dropping the opener 5-2 in Lewiston. Kyle Mai had three hits, including a two-run homer, for the Bengals in the first game.

Softball

Alisha Meade allowed 12 hits but the defense was there when it mattered, as Central Valley (6-9) fell to Mead (15-1) 9-3 in GSL action at Mead. Mikayala Adams went 2 for 4 with two doubles, a triple, two runs and four RBIs for the Panthers.

In other GSL games, Rachel Head went 3 for 4 with a pair of triples, three runs scored and a two-run double as Lewis and Clark (7-9) pounded out 15 hits to beat Ferris (5-10) 8-4 at Ferris. … Tiffany Lucas struck out 11 during a three-hit shutout of Mt. Spokane (7-9) and visiting East Valley (6-10) had RBI doubles from Allie and Baily Riggin to win 2-0. … Katherine Lively had three hits and Sam Pryor belted a home run to ignite a five-run seventh as North Central (7-8) outslugged Rogers (4-11) 13-7 at Rogers. … Jenn Rambo’s double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning plated the tying and winning runs as Gonzaga Prep (8-7) scored the last four runs of the game to beat Shadle Park (7-9) 11-10 at GP. Rambo had five hits and four RBIs for the Bullpups.

•Lindsey Scholwinski had a pair of hits and picked up the win as Coeur d’Alene (19-3, 6-2) knocked off Lewiston (13-12, 3-10) 8-6 in the opener before completing the sweep of the IEL 5A doubleheader 7-1 in Lewiston.

Tennis

The top four No. 1 girls singles seeds – all from the GSL – advanced to the semifinals of the Inland Empire tournament.

No. 1 seed Karin Chymacova of North Central led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Miranda Mielke of Davenport.

In No. 1 boys singles, top-seeded Ethan Vaughn of Mead defeated Alejandro Canseco of Deer Park 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Also for the Panthers, the No. 1-seeded girls doubles team of Elise Ellingsen and Sara Hair advanced to the quarters.

The No. 1 boys doubles team, Andrew and Eddie Chiou of Kamiakin, also advanced.

Play resumes today with the semifinals and finals matches scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. at Mead HS.
