Charged A senior on the Virginia men’s lacrosse team was charged Monday with the slaying of a fellow student on the women’s team, stunning students at the picturesque campus in Charlottesville, Va. George Huguely, 22, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, also a senior, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said. Longo would not detail the extent of Love’s injuries, but said there did not appear to be any weapons used in the slaying. University president John Casteen said in a release on the university’s website that Love’s death “moves us to deep anguish for the loss of a student of uncommon talent and promise.”
Plea Suspended Boise State safety Jason Robinson has reached a plea agreement on a charge of breaking a man’s jaw during a bar fight. Robinson agreed to plead guilty last week to a charge of misdemeanor battery in the Feb. 12 fight. Robinson was arrested in March on a charge of felony aggravated battery. If he had been convicted of a felony, he would have lost his eligibility for an athletic scholarship at Boise State or any other state school.
Arrested Former NFL running back Corey Dillon has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife during an argument at their home in Calabasas, Calif. The Los Angeles County sheriff’s office says deputies went to Dillon’s home Saturday after his wife, Desiree Antoine-Dillon, called 911. The sheriff’s office says the couple argued over a pending divorce and child custody issues and she had minor injuries. He was booked and released on $50,000 bail.
Resigned Hofstra basketball coach Tim Welsh has resigned days after he was charged with drunken driving. Welsh was hired in March and suspended by Hofstra on Friday. Welsh was arrested Friday morning after Nassau County police found him stopped at a green light at an intersection in Levittown. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and is due in district court today.
Returning All-Pro safety Darren Sharper is returning to New Orleans for a chance to repeat as Super Bowl champion in 2010. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis confirmed in an e-mail that Sharper had agreed to terms for one more season. The 34-year-old Sharper intercepted nine passes last season, returning three for touchdowns, and helped the Saints win their first Super Bowl.
Waiting Spain’s Alejandro Valverde has taken the top spot in cycling’s world rankings as he waits for a court ruling that could ban him from racing worldwide for doping. Valverde leads the International Cycling Union’s rankings published Monday, a day after winning the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland.
