College roundup: Sasquatch has decathlon lead
Spencer Wordell of Community Colleges of Spokane has fashioned a 12-point lead in the decathlon after the first day of the NWAACC Multi-Events Championships in Gresham, Ore.
Wordell, who had first-place finishes in the 100 meters and high jump, has 3,395 points to 3,383 for Kevin Godfrey of Lane. Carter Nell of CCS is seventh with 2,933 points.
Sam Berryman of Lane has 2,738 points to lead the heptathlon by 281 points. CCS’s three entrants are well off the pace. Sasha Rueben is the leading Sasquatch in 11th at 1,902.
Golf
Community Colleges of Spokane women captured the NWAACC championship and the Saquatch men finished in a tie for first following the season-ending tournament at Centralia.
The women, edged 518-519 by Green River to finish second in the final event, had a 37-33 point margin over Skagit Valley in the season-long competition.
CCS shared the men’s title with Bellevue, both with 32.5 points. Bellevue won the final event in a one-hole playoff with Skagit Valley after both shot 588s. CCS was a stroke back in third.
Taylor Porter and Tyler Johnson of CCS matched 145s to tie for fourth in the men’s event. Alexa Bell and Alyssa Osterback of CCS had 170s, also sharing fourth in the women’s.
•WAC tournament: Idaho is fifth at 2-over 290, nine strokes behind leader Nevada, after the first round of the 54-hole tournament in Henderson, Nev.
Vandals freshman Matt Rawitzer shot a 4-under-par 68 and is third, four shots back of pace-setting Timothy Madigan of New Mexico State. UI’s David Nuhn shot a 71 and is tied for ninth.
Men’s tennis
Idaho’s season ended in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament Saturday in Fresno, Calif., with a 4-1 loss to No. 43 Hawaii, which captured the title.
Artem Kuznetsov salvaged UI’s point when Hawaii’s Andreas Weber retired after the first set.
