Died An Eastern Oregon football player has died of a head injury suffered during the team’s spring football game. Dylan Steigers, 21, of Missoula, Mont., took a blow to the head late in Saturday’s scrimmage, and died Sunday at a Boise hospital. Steigers walked off the field after the collision, but later vomited on the sidelines, a sign of a concussion. A trainer called 911 and Steigers was taken to Grand Ronde Hospital and later flown to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, school officials said. Doctors said he suffered an acute subdural hematoma as a result of the head injury.

Leading Boxer Manny Pacquiao is leading his race for a spot in the Philippine Congress. The Commission on Elections says Pacquiao is ahead in the count in the southern province of Sarangani, where only about half of 300,000 registered voters cast ballots due to a daylong downpour. Election figures will be released later today.

Staying Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch says the team will probably play at Joe Louis Arena, which opened in 1979, again next season. The Red Wings’ building lease expires at the end of the NHL season. The Red Wings have been contemplating whether to build a new arena or move to The Palace of Auburn Hills, the home of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.

Dismissed Stanford has dismissed point guard JJ Hones from the women’s basketball program for a violation of team rules, coach Tara VanDerveer announced. Hones was a fourth-year junior who had hoped to come back for a fifth year if healthy next season.

Swapped The Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Rams have swapped underachieving former first-round picks, with offensive tackle Alex Barron going to Dallas and linebacker Bobby Carpenter headed for St. Louis. Carpenter made only two starts in four seasons for the Cowboys, one in the regular season and one in the playoffs. Barron was the 19th pick of the 2005 draft and has made 74 starts for St. Louis but has been at least a mild disappointment.
